Goodevening everyone!!So, I was thinking about something today... But I'll spare you the details of that...Oh, and I also wondered about MIG tension... I know on every wire feed welder I've used, there is adjustable tension, but Ive never actually had to adjust it... I've been in a couple situations where I had to "F*c& with it till' it works" but thats about all.I know with too little tension, the wire wont feed, theres nothing pushing it...And with too much, any potential hangup (bent liner, whatever) jolts the wire, as its feeding, to a dead stop and the backup transfers to just in front of the drive rolls and birdsnests, but is there such a thing as a "sweet spot", or do you just start with one problem and work your way to the other?Theres gotta be a secret to this...Just thought I'd ask, thanks again [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:You make some good videos, The open root stick helped me out on my last project thanks. I can't find the video, but what helped me the most is watching a vid from welding tips and tricks and he basically put the mig gun at about 30 degrees and maybe an inch away from the table. tightened the drive roller just enough so it doesn't slip when curling up against the table. Every since I saw that I haven't had a problem with feeding issues. When I get through a spool of wire It is always easy to pull out the remaining wire from the liner so I am pretty sure I would notice if there was more drag and fix or clean accordingly. I am interested in what the real welders have to say...

Reply:Originally Posted by CEPThat's basically how I do it. But I hold the gun in my right hand, and let the wire bounce off my left hand. If the wire stalls I add more tension. If the wire curls off my hand, I know I'm good to go!
Reply:There might be some direction in the machine manual on where to start. On page 21 of the Miller 211 manual it shows using a piece of wood . Hold gun above wood and squeeze trigger so the wire contacts wood and starts to roll up. Just like CEP stated.http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o239988j_mil.pdf See page21 |
