What do you guys think is the best rod for vertical up welds on 3/8", 1/2" plate taking into consideration pool manipulation, overall weld quality and looks?
Reply:Jake, that's wide open question. Are you talking about open root, open root w/backing, fillet, root pass, fill pass,cap........really need some more info for a good answer. And I am assuming that you are referring to mild steel.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Oops, sorry, left a whole sentence out lol. It is mild steel, and I am making t-joint fillets with a stringer bead for the root pass and then 3-4 weaves over top of that.
Reply:Any Exx1x rod would probably do."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Ok I run mostly E7018 and E6010 so I should be fine then.
Reply:3/32" or 1/8" 7018 in almost any situation.  Remember that the fillet doesn't have to be any bigger than the plate thickness.  Anything more is a waste of time and money."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:I would go with 3/32" or 1/8" 7018Syncro 250 DX Power Mig 255Smith Torches
Reply:The brand of welding rod can make a difference.  Esab Atomic Arc nd Lincoln Excaliber always run nice and smooth on vert up.
Reply:Since you are working on good thick stock I would run a root pass with a good E6010 for penetration and then finish with E7018.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:I argee with every body else, a E6010 will work good for the root. If you have any E6010    P5+, In my opinion they are better. As far as the fillers and cap, I like using a 1/8. Takes less welding to do the job. I'm not sure what kind of E7018's you have, but i've found the E7018 H4R to weld better than a plain 7018.
Reply:Running 6010 for a root pass is unnecessary unless your fit up is really bad.  Concentrate on running stringers on your t joints since most vert up will require stringers to be done.
Reply:I'm just a newbie, but for generic vert up I really like 3/32" E7018 on my Maxstar, and 1/8" E7018 on the refrigerator sized stick machines at school.
Reply:1/8 7016 are the best rods ive ever used for vertical up fillets and you get a very good weld appearance.
Reply:Taiden,Not all 7018 run the same. Some brands will run better then others, which makes them easier and nicer to run.  Some rods will spread like butter on bread and some will spread like cold butter, just out of the frig, on bread and you just need to find the one that will work for you.
Reply:We use Excalibur, so I will say I like those 7018 rods. Again though, I am just a noob and haven't used a lot of different rods... but it is the rod I grab when I want to lay some vert up beads.
Reply:I used to like Lincoln's LH 70 and ESAB's Atom-arc, but greatly prefer Lincoln's Excalibur rod to all others now."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:We train using 3/32" Excalibur since that's common on the jobsites where our graduates test. Nice rod, and I also liked Atom Arc when we had that on hand.Lincoln 6010 5P+ "gray" runs nicer than 5P "red" for the root pass (we use 1/8") but either does fine.
Reply:Lincoln 6010 5p+Excaliber or Atom Arc 7018-1TB 302 EFIESAB Migmaster 275MM 211 w/Spoolmate 100Hypertherm PlasmaMetal Master, Victor, and Smith TorchesUnihydro 45Wells BandsawArcair K2000Weldcraft Tig rigMiller 12VSLincoln PT 225No one can say I'm brand biased.
Reply:6011 might be a bit easier if you are new to v up. doing 1/8" 7018 on a 3-4 weld pass isn't ideal
Reply:Also it depends on if you are welding on "scrap" for practice, but some specs call out which rods to use. There again thats the petro/chemical field.
Reply:I just finished a structural job today, Hobart 418 7018 1/8" welds like a dream.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Just a question...? I have yet to see and application mentioned here? What work is the weld doing? Why are the two metals being welded? Is it structural? Static or dynamic in loading? Will your mothers life depend on this weld? What are the steels being welded? Is the weldment going to be subjected to temps. below -20F -50F +500F?

Reply:You are so right on this one. I had the opportunity to run the Hobart 418 7018 a while back and now won't buy anything else. You want to talk about a rod that runs like butter in any position, this is it!Last edited by motorsportsfab; 12-11-2010 at 11:48 AM.
Reply:1/8" 6010 for the root to ensure good penetration.  Cap it with 3/32" 7018, and keep the amperage about the same for each.  90-95A if I recall correctly.Tracker401Another vote for Lincoln Excaliber very nice rod for all positions.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Another vote for the Excalibur, or Lincoln 7018 in general. The Hobart electrodes mentioned previously are also very smooth running...Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!
Reply:I like the way the excaliber rods weld, but I find that when I get the rod stuck I often end up losing a whole bunch of coating off the end of the rod in comparison to the air liquide rods. When working in tight dirty jobs with a lot of stress and pressure this tends to make me pretty cranky.
