New use for a confined space and rescue tripod

Used my Miller confined space and rescue tripod to hold a 9 foot 10-13/16 inch dia pipe to prep for a weld to an existing sigh. Attached Images

Reply:Well I am going to throw you under the bus on this one.  That is a vital life saving safety device not a damn material hoist.  All you are doing is excessively loading a device that's not designed for that.  You risk damaging the hoist, cable, legs, etc. So when you do need it, when your in a confined space rescue situation, the hoist fails and you can't pull someone out your screwed.  I would put that hoist out of service and have it inspected by the manufacture at this point. Reply:We've ALL done some things that are in a Gray area from time to time to get a job done, and I give your full marks for being resourceful....But at the same time, I also heavily frown upon using Engineered Rescue Equipment for this.I wouldn't have posted it on the internet saying "Look at me" and the money you will have to spend to have it re-certified would have gone a long way to purchasing the CORRECT Equipment for the job.I'd run you out of my yard too.Later,Jason
Reply:We just got one of those tripods at work.  I don't ever see us using it to rescue a person.  While they briefed us about it in the safety meeting I asked... how do you expect the unconscious person to attach it to themselves.  What do you mean they replied?  We don't have any SCBA's to go rescue the person with.  And I'm not going into a tank without an air pack to hook up a rope.  When you work on boats you have frames with 16 inch lightening holes that are about 36-48 inches off the deck for access in tanks.  So, what if you are unconscious 1 or more frames forward of the hatch?  Yeah, those tripods are mostly useless in most situations without a trained search and rescue crew.  SO... why not use them for something functional.

Reply:from the looks of the piece of pipe the tripod is not even overloaded..the person in the hole is supposed to keep the winch attached if hes alone..which he should not be..
