Is there any rule or tip for open butt joint prep ??A big part of why my root passes are coming out like crap is because of the way im preparing it I think! Should the root face and gap be the same size as your rod size..eg...1/8th rod..1/8 face and gap?Or should I set the gap 1 size smaller then the rod I'm using? Is there any rule of thumb or what is your guys preference on open butt prep?I'm running roots with 6013 and 7018..so maybe it will be different to joint prep when one is using 6010!!
Reply:I run my roots with 6010. I have never been on a job were they will have you run a root with 7018 on any root were there is no backing strip. I weld tube and pipe ,all the roots I put in are with 6010+, for stick or 70-80 s2 wire for tig roots. how you want your gap and landing is up to you every one is a little diffrent
Reply:For open root butt joints I like a 1/8 gap, 60° bevel with a 3/32 land. I use 1/8 6010 for the root and 7018 for the fill and cap. After your root is in I like a light grinding to get out the wagon tracks in the root. Hope this helps. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2Hobart Stick mate LX AC/DCHarris O/A outfit
Reply:I always did 1/16th gap and 1/16th land and 3/32 6010 for the root. Never tried much different, as that was what the procedure called for. Strike the arc, jam the rod through the gap and just follow it around. If the keyhole opens up you need to pause and whip a little to get some more metal in there. This was only on pipe that I did it.
Reply:I fit for a 3/32 gap, and land. I use 1/8 6010 rod. With this fit up I just jam the rod and drag it around the pipe.. If the fit up is wider, a whipping or circular tech maybe used. I also had to butter the edges before, which sucked, and I also had to do the stick like tig roots, they are a treat too.. So if u can, try to fit your own joints.. Lol |
