Here are some photos I forgot I took during my advanced TIG class last fall. It was a practice vertical open root, 1/2 plate, 37 1/2 degree bevel. I used a Dynasty 300DX and can't recall the exact amperage, I want to say around 175, lift arc and no pedal. 3/32 ER70s-6 and 3/32 Diamond Ground Cryo-T tungsten.I did 5-10 of these in each position, mainly to get the techniques of walking the cup and root passes down in preparation for pipe. I'm aware the bottom isn't filled up, this was an early one and it's difficult to walk the cup when there's nothing for the cup to walk on. It was allowed for the first few then we were required to have the entire length filled up, remember, practice. I know the cap is a bit shoddy, again this was an early one.  By the end of the course and countless v grooves like this and open roots on schedule 80 in 2g, 5g and 6g they looked pretty damn good. I wish I had taken more photos.Just thought I'd share, interested in what you all have to say.Anyway:1. About 3/4 filled2. Close up3. Final fill4. Sup-par cap  ..... the picture is upside down.
Reply:I didn't get to do anything cool like that when I was in school earlier this year. My teacher talked about walking the cup and the level 2 students did a bit of pipe welding, but he just teased us with that stuff. I'd rather do it on my own with my own equipment anyway.
Reply:We have dynasty 200dx at the company I work at and they have been nothing but problems (mostly on AC). Hope you have had better luck than us. Welds look good up the good work.
Reply:Nice, I haven't had much occasion to walk the cup, but every now and then an opportunity appears out of nowhere. Today I had a chance to do it on some 3/16" Stainless parts that had a lap weld on three sides. Sometimes when you've got a good enough space to prop it's the easiest way to go, especially for vertical up and overhead. I'm hoping to get my pipe cert before long....Proud to support Reliable Sheet Metal Works, in Fullerton, CA.Full service sheet metal fabrication serving Orange County since 1926.http://www.reliablesheetmetal.com
Reply:Do you by chance go to PCT?  Your location, plus the setup and clamps look very familiar.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:I can't say whether I have had any problems with my Dynasty or not since I have only stick welded with it so far because I had a slight internal gas leak from the fitting in the back and little time to get it fixed. It should be fixed soon and then I'll put it to work with some carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
Reply:I love walking the cup, My teacher would tell us to do a project over again if we walked the cup, It does look good though! Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:The term for good welds like this is called smoking it down.  i.e. Hertz can smoke it down.
