Picked up a barely used Thermal Arc 95S the other day off of CL.  I was finally able to get an argon bottle and get it filled.  I love it already.  I have put in a few hours of practice and this is my first time ever even using a tig.  I had to read the directions to even figure out how to assemble the torch.  I bought the tig on a whim just because it was basically new and figured it would give me a chance to learn the basics.I have just been playing with some 11 gauge CR steel I had laying around.  Using a 1/16 red tungsten, #6 cup and 1/16 ER70S-2 filler.Things I have learned:Lift arc is interesting, but I'm getting used to it.  Still working on finishing/breaking the arc.Forgetting to turn on the gas sucks, having the gas flow start automatically would be great.A pedal or control seems like a feature that would be quite nice, although it's definitely not a requirement.I'm already addicted and will probably spend my entire coming week off practicing in the garage.A couple pics.  So far, I can pretty much tell when I'm not doing something correctly and it's reflected in the bead afterwards.  Just need quite a bit more seat time to work on quality/consistency.  Feedback is good
Reply:Looking good.Try to keep a consistant travel speed, and watch the undercut. Not bad at all for just learning! Get out their and burn some more rodYa gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:That's the one thing I noticed was a bit of undercut, along with not letting the first part of the bead wet in.  I got better at getting the first bit wetted in.  I think that's where having a pedal would be nice.  Just need to make some adjustments and practice.  Torch angle seems to make a pretty big difference.
Reply:learn to , on the wire and not dip the pool or walk the cup , goto you tube and check out and see if u can find videos on the technique, good lookin for just learnin !
Reply:im awaiting the arrival of my 95s as well. Ive stick welded in class but no TIG as yet.what amps are u using?
Reply:That was right around 85-90 amps.  I don't think you could go much thicker than the 11 gauge I was using.  I love the 95S though.  It's a great machine to learn on considering what it cost me to get into it.
Reply:Yup. looking to do the same.post up some more practice beads.
