Ok well, I bought this TIG welder recently and I realized I needed something to weld on. (something other than wood)So I decided to keep cost down I would go with a 2'x4' 3/16" top (removeable so I can put a thicker one on at some point)2"sq tubing at 1/8"Plans:I'm no art major:I acquired the metal and started to build.. first step make sure she is square.  I did all the cuts on a chop saw and sometimes the blade likes to deflect... lame. Some terrible pictures of my welds:Need some of this:And definitely some of that:It's starting to look like something,... I think. More on the next post...JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)
Reply:More weld bead shots:  I'm really trying to make them look "cool"That's it for now, more to come soon.  I'm debating a back rack to hang some masks and stuff on.Let me know your thoughts...JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)

Reply:Hot roll A36 3/16" for now.  I will be welding "lock" tabs securing it from moving around (essentially, it will be a floating top)I would like to get at least a 3/8" thick in the near future.  I also biffed in my measurements (maybe in my favor??)  I was supposed to do the width of the table at 44" but I forgot and I kept them at 48".  I had planned to have the top go 2" over the base on all sides for clamping, but cest le vie I guess haha.So my new top will be 52" by 24" or 26".  But I'm pretty much broke after buying the Syncrowave LOL, but the deal was too good to pass up.  So I will deal with the thinner top for now and roll with it.I see you are in Chicago.  Are you in the city proper? I'm essentially on the border of Wisconsin near the lake.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)

Reply:Oooh nifty.  I know the area wellish.Um, I get from Adams Steele service in McHenry.(Pete Kasper is usually pretty quick to respond)  I got quotes from a bunch of places and they came out the cheapest.  Essentially, I use onlinemetals.com as my calculator for quotes. (I screen shot the lengths and measurements and then shoot it out to a bunch of places by e-mail and see what they got) I gotta head over there soon to get some more (it's about 45 mins :-(  ) and check out their remnants pile.In general, it would seem that all places are right around the same (around here at least)  Really, you almost have to factor distance in as well unless you are having them deliver (most will deliver). In a pinch, I'll hit Menards or whatever.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)
Reply:How much do you have into it so far and how big is the square stock? Reply:Finished the main top today:I wanted to make it removeable for if I need to move to a thicker top.(TABS)I was kind of pissed with some of my welding I rushed it, and I hate that.  But we kind of got ... um.. surprised at the shop by 2 guys who needed a jump so it left me on edge. Reply:Do you get a better deal if you pick out of their remnants pile?Thats would be leftovers of new metal as opposed to straight up scrap?"Great spirits have always encountered violent oppostion from mediocre minds."  --  Albert Einstein
Reply:I actually left my corners square, sometimes it can be a quick squaring tool. You my want to put another bar on it to hang your clamps.Good looking table.Tim Beeker.

Reply:Nice table!I will be starting mine here shortly....basically the same thing but even a little smaller (36x20), cuz I dont have much room and I got good deal on a 3/8 plate that size.I live right outside of Mchenry and have been to Adams a few times.  Its right down the block.  I got the 30ft of 1.5x1.5x1/8 for the table there.  I think it was about $100.  They dont really have a scrap pile that you can look thru.  They dont even really want to hear u ask for drops or go in the back.  Just tell em what u want and he will get it.I would rather go to Waukegan Steel Sales, but its further for me.  If u want drops, they tell u to grab a hard hat and goggles and go in the back and see what u can find.  Plus there is an Airgas right across the street, so if u need to, u can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.Just as info to the local guys, I got a bunch of angle for my mig cart at Lowes.  I think I got like 30ft of 1x1x1/8 and 40ft of 1x3/4x1/8 and a bunch more for like $20.Anyways, I am just finishing my 1st project which is of course the cart.  Pretty basic cart, but still took longer than I thought.  Ill put up some pics in another thread, but I can assure you all, it is not very impressive.Sorry to hijack Joe!!  Where are u at exactly?  By the chain?
Reply:If I may make a suggestion, ADD crossmembers. I ran 5 (including the 2 end ones) on a 24"x48" long table. I call it my 'moneymaker'. It's where I do all my engine / transmission work, and to keep weight down (it's on wheels) i used 1/4" steel for the top. I routinely weld dogs and scrap to bolt blocks down to work on them, and the added stiffness really helps ALOT. I think I have a thread here with my build. Some kind fellow was even nice enough to run a FEA on it, and found that the middle deflects less than an eighth with 2000lb on a quarter sized dot anywhere on the table top.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
