So i have a open root 3g test on monday with 7018 all the way out..so i did some practicing today..heres some pics..I used 2.5 root gap and face..using 2.5 7018.. I had to cap with 6013 3.2s as i had no 3.2 7018s and i didnt want to use 2.5 7018 for the cap as the weave would of been to much for the 2.5 rod.. Attached Images
Reply:and the rest of pics....Prob could of ran the 6013 a tad bit hotter..but I wont be using 6013 on the day..any advice guys?thanks Attached Images
Reply:Very Nice welds in pictures 3 and 4. In Picture 3 and 4 did you use a Z weave motion? In pictures 2 and 3 is that the back side view of the root pass?
Reply:Also is that 3/8"thick steel?
Reply:yea thats the back side of the weld with 7018... 12mm plate! ...z weave

Reply:Are picts 2 and 3 the back side of your root pass? They look pretty inconsistent and not quite what I'd expect to be seeing. If you ground out the root and welded from the back, that would explain what I'm seeing. If so, I'd like to see how much penetration you got with your 1st pass. If you aren't getting good consistent penetration with your root, you might as well stop there and work on that 1st. Biggest issue I have with students doing bevel buts it the root passes. If they can lay in good consistent roots, usually they don't have issues with the other passes. If they can't do good roots, they usually have issues with all the other parts as well. Picts 1 and 4 also look like they could use some work on consistency, but they aren't that bad. I'd like to see the ripples a bit tighter and smoother myself. I'll put some of what I see down to the camera and the fact they probably look a bit better in person than they do here due to the contrast difference with the camera. Same goes with your weaves. They could be a bit flatter and tighter and a bit more consistent.Keep practicing and paying attention to the puddle. Quick fast movements side to side not going up far with each movement will help smooth things out and help with control as opposed to slower motions that go up farther with each motion.
