What setting on a welding helmet is darker 13 or 9? The cheaper helmets only go 9-13 and more expensive helmets go as low as 5? Is 5 brighter or darker than 13? I am brand new to welding and I would sooner keep it to the darker side to protect my eyes.So the big question is what is darker 5 or 13?

Reply:Shade 5 is for oxy fuel cutting/gouging or plasma cutting. For all my welding I do (mostly stick and tig) I use shade 10 on my auto dark helmet.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:All shades will offer complete protection for your eyes, as you will find certain jobs require different shades. I regularly switch between a 10-11-12 depending on the task while I use a 5 for plasma or oxy-fuel cutting. For general arc welding your probably going to be between a 9 and 12Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Oxy-Fuel welding/cutting is usually done with a shade 5 lens. Im not sure why anyone would wear a helmet when they could just wear some goggles, but to each his/her own. Like they said, most arc welding is done between shades 9-13. My helmet goes 9-12, and after a while welding with a 9, my eyes start to hurt. With a 12, i cant see anything, so i usually stay around 10-11, which is pretty standard.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:I usually use a 9 on really low amp tig, 10 for most stuff though. 5 is for oxyfuel. sometimes I use 11 when I'm doing 150ish amps on 1/8" e7018 excalibur rods. 13 is for really high amp arc welding, stuff most hobbyists will never see
Reply:You might find that while welding at night a darker setting (around 11) will help. The retina opens wide due to the night conditions, and has to close down further when the arc is running. Even with protection, this can make for headaches or eye strain. And like any other adjustable thing, don't particularly trust the numbers.........set it for your comfort zone"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
