I have been entertaining the idea of picking up a little inverter generator such as this one made by etq http://www.easterntools.com/product_...r_in3500i.html. It will have many uses but i would like for it to also be able to run my thermal arc 161stl on 110v. The welder is awesome and seems very effecient in that is has way more power then the 95s on a standard 20 amp breaker. The generator will produce the amperage and it even has a 25 amp plug for camper I suppose. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with these little generators or any small output generators running a small stick welder. Reply:This is all I know on the subject.  Not an inverter generator though.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=41121My name's not Jim....
Reply:It looks like the 161, and 95s pull about the same amount power on 120 input. It's just the 161 can output more on a good 120 amp line. I hooked a 95s to a Honda 3000i inverter (full output 120 volt outlet ) and it would snap the breaker all the time. It would never happen on a house 20 amp output. Never happens on my Thermal arc scout 170 generator. I would rather use the scout for stick welding because it runs 6010 way better. I like the 95 s for what it is though. I been way more impressed with the Thermal-arc scout then any inverter generator I have used. Kicks the crap out of them in motor starting ability. Run's my well pump, that's down around 520 ft.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:You need to pick a generator that puts out more than what your welder needs at full output. No point in getting a genny that is to small then one day needing to run your welder at full tilt and not having enough watts from the genny.
Reply:Thanks for the info guys. I have a 5500 watt porter cable generator powered by a honda but it is very difficult to just throw in back of truck when needed and I was hoping I could sneak by with a small inverter style cause they are super portable. I have read that they are touchy to an instant load and the breakers trip. I have come upon that some have bypassed the breaker and put a delay burn fuse in with success. I don't want to spend a bunch of money and not be able to also use it for the welder. I have been also thinking about building some sort of crane for back of truck to lift things such as the generator in and out as well as engines and what not. I will maybe just have to go that route.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
Reply:looks like a porta potty
Reply:The little inverter puts out a modified sine wave that averages out the peaks for voltage, may not be healthy for your welder, at the very least you would have to go much higher.Got a D2 genset with pup motor about 18kva with exciter on skids, was used to backup a dairy farm if you want.lol
Reply:I have a 2000 watt Hundyai inverter generator and have found that it will not run my 100 amp inverter stick/tig in the higher range.
Reply:I load my generator with a Torin engine lift, the 2 ton model, works like a  champ.  Ralph
Reply:Thanks again guys for the responses. Portability was the main objective here. Initial loading is no problem since I have a 2 ton cherry picker as well as a mobile gantry crane. The on site loading and unloading is whats a pain and the other uses such as camping and other things was main reason for the little generator. The ability to run the welder was mainly something that was a bonus and would be very handy as I also don't always have room when I hit the road to bring the big generator with. Somehow delaying the breaker or using a slow burn fuse sounds like it may work out on these little units. I don't think it would hurt the generator as the momentary loading shouldn't overheat anything. Not sure if it would be an issue for the welder or not. I guess trying it out would be the only real way to tell. It wouldn't be a highly used combination. Maybe a few times a year is all. Mostly just for a "just in case" scenario would be handy to have the little generator along.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
