cutting a barrel

I am trying to cut a barrel, but not quite in half. I guess you could say I want to cut about a third.  I am having a hard time getting the top and bottom measurements equal to get a straight cut. Is there a secret I do not know about? Any help is appreciated.

Reply:Lat it on the floor or table & measure up, then use a level to get a straight line.  Use a grinder & cutting sisc for the cuts

Reply:i used to have a neat little tool called a pipe wrap? - lost it a long time ago. it was 4" thick and about 10' long so you could wrap it over itself at least once to get a straight cut. worked great and only cost about $20 got it at my LWS

Reply:I ended up laying it on my bench and measuring up with a speed square, it just so happens that the top of my square was exact with where I wanted to cut.

Reply:if you make a mark on the barrel as a starting point, then figure the distance from the center to the edge. take that and it will divide it into 6th by marking it all the way around it. just use every other one.
