Reply:Very nice mod .  I think I'll have to do the same thing for my home built press (uses a jet air over 20ton).  Definitely makes it alot easier to lock and unlock the jack.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Nice! I have a few hydro jacks around here that could use a nob! If you want a knurl send it over here and I'll knurl it and send it back no charge. I'm nice like that.

Reply:Originally Posted by DSW Just inquired about that Tuesday night in my lathe class. Threading and knurling were the 2 things I really wanted out of the class. Basic instructions were to turn the OD down to be sure it's concentric. Install the knurling tool and get it cenetered on the work. Run the table in say 15 thou and engage the travel on the bed...I didn't have much luck in the 15 min I had to F with it. I think the junk stock I brought with me was hardened. I had a b!tch of a time cutting and facing the end, then the knurler left no marks even though I cranked it in enough to bow the piece in the centers. I need to pick up some decent steel for next tuesdays class so I can play again if the rest of the class doesn't catch up soon.

Reply:Your knob looks good...I may have to make one of those.  DSW - Threading isn't too bad.  I just figured it out a few weeks ago.  Just make sure all the angles are set right and don't touch the cross feed.  As long as you only use the compound it's easy.  Now I just need to figure out knurling.

Reply:I had issues too.  A few major things:  Make sure your cutter is ground (or you can buy them) at 60*.  The compound has to be set at the right angle.  The angle is referenced from the cross slide, so you have to double check how your compound is marked.  The 0 reference could be from the spindle centerline or the cross side centerline.  I set mine at 29.5 (you will see people saying 29-30 depending on where you look) and the threads came out perfect.  I might experiment when I get some more experience.  The last thing is ONLY use the compound to feed.  If you move the cross slide it will ruin the threads.  The other thing that helped me is having a VFD to slow the spindle speed so I didn't have to react as fast.  I could thread the course thread and have a little time to think.  Once I get more practice, I should be able to do it at full speed.
Reply:I have been making my living as a machinist for over 25 years and never have cut a thread using the compound, I only feed in with the cross slide. compound is set a t zero so that you can widen the thread root if need be. It is all in how you were trained and what the application is.LarryMiller XMT 304 CC/CVSyncrowave 180 SDLincoln PowerMig 255XTTermalDynamics 52Lincoln 305GComlpete machine shop to back it up

Reply:Looks great!Larry, I think most home shop guys use the compound because they have smaller less ridged machines that chatter like a high school girl when cutting anything more then .010" of a cut especially on two faces of a tool. When feeding the compound only one side of the tool is cutting putting less stress on the machine normally resulting in nicer threads.
Reply:Very nice. Looks good. I may have to make one of these in class for the 20 ton bottle jack I keep in the truck. At least it would give me something useful to practice on in class on Tuesday. Might even splurge... I think I've still got a length of SS prop shaft I could use. I did pick up a few feet of cold rolled in different sizes  the other day if nothing else..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Here is a handle I made for my jack simple for those that don’t have a lathe. On threading the angle of 29.5 using a 60 degree cutter is so you only cut with the leading edge of the tool.  Less work for the tool.  I have not cut a lot  of threads but once you see it don right you then can do it well.  I do not undo the half nut just forward and reverse with the motor drive.  Any way that’s how I do it.attached are some adapter I cut in brass for tig torchs.
