I was just wondering if their are any boilermakers on these forum, I remember seeing a few posts from someone but can't remember for the life of me who it was. I will have my associates in General Technology in December I have passed both 3G and 4G Unlimited thickness tests in SMAW and can TIG weld pretty well in all positions. My questionable area is my MIG as I don't have much formal training on in and have less than 3 hours of hood time with MIG. Almost  all my training is in stick/tig. But anyways I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what it is like being a boilermaker I don't mind confined spaces, heights maybe a little(but I think it is all in my head). I am not 100% sure what I want to do when I graduate but their is one thing I know I love to learn and I love welding.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:90% dirty and cramped, some positions bordering on impossible.  2 inches of clean steel somewhere in front of you to weld on.  Doesn't have to be picture perfect, just pass code of the day.  Anyone who has done it has respect for the rest still doing it.  Most likely will never have a butt joint sitting on pipestands.  Lots more to boilermaking than tube work.....dams, vessels, storage tanks, pollution systems, breaching, stacks......  Google individual lodges and check for picture pages.http://www.boilermakers359.org/pages...mberphotos.htm

Reply:I'm a union boilermaker and love my trade. There's not much work in the south at the moment so prepare to travel. If you don't mind traveling you can make good money.

Reply:I worked on permit for the boilermakers years ago and work with some at the plant I work at.  The best advice I could give you is be willing to travel and when you are working, pack your money away like a squirrel.  It seems to be feast or famine.  When the guys work, they may work 12 hour days seven days a week but then may not work for a month or more.  As a union man myself, I say give it a shot.  Or, try and get an apprenticeship with the iron workers or pipe fitters.
