I see Horrible Fright has their No. 6 acetylene rosebud on sale for an incredible $5.97 right now (see http://tinyurl.com/cheapTip). I know their kit is a Victor clone. Anyone know if this tip will actually work with a real Victor no. 100 handle?metalmagpie
Reply:Maybe. I've seen some knock offs that will accept victor parts / victors that will accept knock off parts and some that won't. All depends just how close to tollerance the  knock off part was made to. Only way to find out really is to try it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Do you have a big enough acetylene tank to run it?
Reply:Victors and their clones have been around for a very long time. If draw is an issue, propane is an option. While the tip shield in the pics was TIGed in place, it's easy enough to use a worm drive hose clamp to secure a piece of copper pipe around an acetylene rosebud as a shield so the propane flame doesn't blow out.The tip extension probably doesn't need to be that long, but it doesn't get very hot so I left it in place. It's a common copper pipe coupling from a hardware store. Attached Images

Reply:So you're saying it is possible to modify an acetylene rosebud to use propane as the fuel, by adding a copper tube up around the tip?
Reply:Originally Posted by farmallSure can, I did, and it works fine. No blowouts, no problems. I wish I'd tried it years earlier. If your try propane with an acetylene rosebud, note how far out the base of the flame sits. With the mod, flame is protected from crossbreezes and becomes stable.Since commercial tips don't look like that, I'm sure I could shorten it. I have no reason to so it will stay that length until I damage it then I'll amputate. Small dents are easily straightened since the copper was softened when it was welded on. My clamp-on version is made from an old section of Tweco MIG gun nozzle. It's just plumbing. Nothing fancy required, nothing disturbed inside the torch. The teftape is merely there as anti-seize for easy field stripping.
Reply:Instead of trying to build a lip, or guesstimating what size would be required, I added tubing at a length I was SURE would do. It is about 3/4" long.I suggest doing what I did with my other (unwelded) tip, which was match a hunk of tubing to the outside of the rosebud, clamp it on, and fire it up. The tubing doesn't have to be copper. Browse through the hardware store with the tip in your hand and have at it.If it melts, it's way too long. If the flame isn't stable, it's too short.
Reply:Will do. I've heard that some of the big Victor acetylene tips (MFA-15, for example) work with other fuel gases as is. I only use propane but I have a couple of big acetylene rosebuds I'd like to be able to use or at least sell. And it would be cool to convert a $6 Harbor Freight acetylene rosebud into propane. By the way, this special is really a close-out, item not sold in stores, so you have to add like $6 or $7 for shipping so you might as well buy their $12 one in the store. Oh, well. I am old enough to remember when they always shipped free. Thanks for your wisdom!metalmagpie
