Friend needed a bung welded on his intercooler pipe so I said I would do it for him. Drilled, cleaned and put a tack weld on and got this. Was it from too much heat or could be from not enough post flow or crappy aluminum? I only got 1 tack. Luckily for me I have a few of these bungs so I just used one of my own. This has only happened to me twice.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Did you build heat slowly (sneak up on it)?  If you did, the small piece became saturated with heat and melted.  Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:It was only 70ish amps and I started slow on the pipe below it to get it to puddle and moved the torch up to dip. It's just odd; I felt like I can weld halfway around something like this and not get that issue, but it's will happen easier with a quicker tack weld.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:weld that hot and fast like dave said above you did put not enough heat into it fast enough and melted the partMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:If that bung will accept an O2 sensor I would thread one in so it can absorb some of the residual heat.  A bolt would also work. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Can I guess you were using a pretty large tungsten? Probably with a big round end?For tacking something like this I would use tiny tacs and a thin tungsten with about a 90 degree point on it. This will start a small puddle with minimal heat input and arc wander.Lincoln precision TIG 275Millermatic 140 MIG

Reply:I had to repair a longitudinal crack in the drain plug area of an old compressor oil pan.Inserting a brass plug the entire length worked great. The few threads we lost by Ving the crack actually formed over the brass.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
