Ok so we have been machining and rebuilding hydraulic cylinders, we tig to prevent spatter, control heat issues ect, anyways I mostly weld aluminum, as you would heat the metal dip the rod, and move foward 1/16-1/8 of an inch and create a nice stack of dimes. I use this same technique on these hydraulic rods, my partner does not like this technique, and would perfer me to weld on the positioned and constantly flow the metal in.Do any of you guys machine and rebuild cylinders for a living and could tell me the proper procedure, or technique, and possibly a picture or two
Reply:If the way you're doing it results in the product being fixed right, and it follows whatever code you need to follow if there is one. Who cares?Different people weld differently.
Reply:Well he's a macinest, I'm a welder, he's been rebuilding cylinders for years, and even though he can weld, he's not a welder. That's why I am curious. Some of the cylinders are for carrying people, such as lulls ect
Reply:I was curious if there was a procedure though, I weld in a root, and 2 hot passes and a cap, stack of dimes though.
Reply:so why not make him happy and "constant" feed the puddle... guess the stack of dimes is harder on machine bitshere's what I think about stack of dimes  Attached Images--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:Nice weld friend. That looks like a single pass, but is nice, we are putting 4-5 passes and he likes convex welds instead of concave. Im welding up anothe head on an excavator cylinder tomorrow, will post some pics. These welds are to hold 10,000+/- psi

Reply:Double edged sword of a question if you ask me! But a good one to bring up a fight that goes on for days. And machinests are not welders although some claim to be  so if your a pro welder why would you consider some other tradesmans opinion?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
