Finished a pre-employment welding course, after having welded for a little over a year. Did some tig in the class and got decent at it and wanted to do more so I managed to get my hands on a new diversion 180. Having issues with porosity now though. Started a small project, just some simple outside corner welds should be simple. Iv swept the regulator all the way from 9-22lpm and nothing seemed to help. Pieces were cut with a plasma and cleaned up with a grinder. Maybe I did not clean enough? first pics are just some little practice parts from school. Thanks for any help. Last picture is the current diffuser? If thats the word. Perhaps a gas lens would help? Attached Images

Reply:I can't see well because I'm on my phone. If that with all the porosity is steel it looks like there's still mill scale close to where you are welding. Should be ground clean everywhere you weld and at least a 1/4 all around the weld.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:No lol I'm not welding like that. Theres a cup. Was just trying to show the set-up it has right now and wanted to know if people would put a heavy recommendation on getting a gas lens kit.
Reply:Well, All the settings you were using would help. Are you sure you have 100% argon?www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:It looks like contamination from the metal. Did you grind back the mill scale? Did you use filler? What kind, 70S-2 or 70S-6? Was that a plasma cut edge? The slag from plasma will contaminate every time, must be ground back to shiny metal.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Clean, clean, clean. As for gas lens's that all I use.Edit to add: after you "cleaned up" with a grinder did you wipe with acetone? Also it doesn't look like you ground back away from the joint?Last edited by Wes917; 07-14-2013 at 07:04 PM.
Reply:yes, 100% argon. 3/32 thoriated tungston. Right now its at roughly 100 amps, mostly just using the pedal to control the heat, no filler. It is a plasma cut edge and I did grind the edges afterwards. From what I hear most likely not enough though, Didnt really remove any of the millscale. Gonna try and clean it better on the next edge and hopefully that will help.Last edited by mike7466; 07-14-2013 at 07:21 PM.
Reply:A couple of random points-The fillets look better than the outside corners, and it can be hard to get adequate gas coverage on outside corners. A gas lens would probably help. Are you sure of your filler? RG-45 looks just like ER70S-6, but will cause porosity with TIG.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Yup, Millscale was the cause. Just tried grinding further back and the pieces and welds together way nicer. Thanks for the help everyone. Live and learn :P
