Couple practice beads

Hopefully this works. Been away for awhile with work and family and stuff. Anyway ad a chance to lay a couple beads yesterday. Did some 6011 at 100 amps, thought it looked ok. Then did some 7018 at 100+ amps and didn't really like the way it looked. Looks like the rod was just melting on top the plate. Practice material was 5/16 angle. Material too thick for 1/8 rod? Top lines were the 6011, bottom is the 7018. Oh yeah, ac buzz box.Thanks for any input. Tom Attached Images
Reply:100 amps seems way hot for 6011. Flat position, I usually run it at 85. Your bottom 7018 beads show some promise. Reasonably straight and consistent. Keep practicing. It's hard to see much else on that plate due to spatter and slag. 5/16" isn't too thick for 1/8 electrodes if all you're doing is laying beads. If you wanted to weld a joint, you would need to bevel and take  multiple passes, but it could be done.Last edited by joshuabardwell; 07-16-2013 at 11:08 AM.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!
Reply:Thank you. The pic doesn't do justice, the 7018 is mounded up maybe 3/16 high. I was thinking it should lay flatter on the metal. Or should I not be worrying about that when just laying beads? I'll drop the amps next time on the 6011. It was real easy to start an arc though

Reply:Dave, unless I read the chart on the machine wrong(very possible) I thought it showed 100 as the upper end of the 7018. ThorsHammer, very good advice, and I know better. Just didn't have any disc for my grinder at the house. Thanks everyone. Will try higher amps on clean material this weekend. See if I like the results any better.

Reply:After cleaning  your practice plate draw a few parallel lines with a soap stone and follow them.  It will help keep you straight.  Dan
