I know we used to hook the welders together to get them started but I was just wondering if I were to hook my 250 idealarc to the sa200 would it work the same or not.
Reply:Check post #14. You can damage the armature starting a welder through the leads.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...rmature+damagePicture of damage here:http://www.weldmart.com/LINCOLb5.jpgDave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:We used to start all the diesels out on the job on a cold day with any of the gas jobs. Never heard of hurting either hooking two generator types together. My question was can the ideal arc be used as the power source it not being a generator type. They should be the same kind of electricity, they sure weld alike. Just wondering. My old welder never had a starter so when I bought it for 200 and the valves were stuck another welder ran it for a good long time to get it limbered up.
Reply:I do suppose after looking at the no.14 anything can happen. I think we always turned down the power welder as far as it would go. Maybe that helped. Been many years since I done it. Back in the good old days when they wouldnt let a blue welder on the pipeline or gas plant. Ha. Has been awhile.
Reply:I'm sure many did the same thing. A little knowledge from the repair shops never hurts I'm new to SA200's and only 42yrs old - have many years before I'm an old timer looking at the "way back" - LOL Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Im 63 and yes it seems away back. I am retired on the farm now so dont have to wake up no more welding on top of some motor shed with snow blowing thru my hood anymore. Ha.
Reply:Sometimes cold is good - like when laying in the snow welding on a septic pumping truck - I was just happy nothing was dripping on me!! That was almost 20 years ago now....yikes.... Reply:That's how I got my SA250 going after I freed the engine up, turn the machine your starting all the way down, and the machine your using to turn it over up. Hook pos to pos and neg to neg and it will spin right over for you. You can only do this to certain machines.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I always just stuck the leads on the battery posts with the machine turned all the way down and then turned the fine adjustment up until it cranked fast enough to sounds right.Good way to burn up a starter, but when you've got 5 union ironworkers standing around at a cost of $52/hr each; starters don't seem so expensive.Beck's Welding and Fabrication, Inc.-Misc.
