I was given a free old style heavy bag.  I'm looking for ideas on mounting it, possibly on a folding wall mount that will be attached to the loft I built in my garage.Commercially available mounts I've found have all been along these lines......and wouldn't really work for the possible locations I have in mind.Has anyone here built a custom folding wall mount for a heavy bag?"These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Legal requirements do not exist.Technical issues subject to change."_________________________________________Lincoln MIG PAK 180Lincoln AC-225
Reply:No, but when I used to have one in my garage, I put a very heavy eye-bolt through a roof truss, and hung it.  The rope came down the nearest wall, so I could raise the bag up out of the way.   Just a thought.__David Hillman
Reply:Good idea probably but not feasible in my garage.  The ceiling's ~12' high and the trusses are fully enclosed by styrofoam insulation.  The bag would be suspended on a long chain or rope and would swing too much during a work out (I'm guessing)."These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Reply:what about a slide system that would run down one of your 2x6's slide in to the wall slide out to the middle where the ATV is when you want to use it so there is enough room for kicks as well. kind of like these over head cranes but a lot smaller http://www.craneveyor.com/cranes/transceiling.htmI would just distribute the weight well with a mount that would hold a S beam or "I" beam then run a wheel system on each side of the beam(in the channels of the beam) kind of like a roller coaster. and make a pin hole or some way to make the wheels lock into place when in work out position and stored position..
Reply:Where exactly do you want to mount it on the loft. How high is the bottom of the loft (and how tall are you), how large are the floor joist for the loft, and what is the spacing, how thick in the decking on the loft?how heavy is this heavy bag, and what are it's dimensions? how tall (with and without chains) and diameter. How far out from the loft do you want it to be?The joists look to be able 2x6. If that is the case, I would double up the two or three joist closest to where you want to mount the bag. And I would double up the front ledger between the two post where you want to mount it. Not only does this give you more strength in the structure, but also allows you more surface to lag into. This is assuming that the heavy bag is 80 lbs or more. anything under that 1)shouldn't IMO be called a heavy bag, and 2) shouldn't require that much support. The first thing that came to my mind was a system that mounted to the bottom of the loft and either came straight out or did a _l¬ (best I could do in text). depending on the height of the loft/size of the bag.  for the straight out version you may be able to get away with just a U shaped pivot that the rotating arm fits into with a heavy pin (and secondary pin to lock the arm in place). With the one that bends vertical and then horizonal you could do just a pipe (or solid bar) inside of a pipe. for the pivot lock you'd just need another pin but this time it would be horizontal in the vertical pivot. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:If you're mounting under the joist you'll want to make sure that you're hitting at least two joists 3 if you centered on one. this will widen the mounting surface and help with the torsional flex on the joists caused by the swinging bag/impacts.There are no problems. Reply:2x4 flat on top of the deck, drill a hole in the center and span at least two joists, drill corresponding hole through the deck and hang an eye bolt to suspend the bag.   Got an engine crane in the garage, I hang mine from the cherry picker now and then when I want to take out some frustration, LOL."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:how about a piece of decent sized tubing, something like 2x2 tubing mounted to a couple of good sized drawer slides mounted on the underside of the loft with some kind of catch or latch, maybe like a gate latch...    when you wanted to use it, simply pull the bag out from under the loft, latch it, use it, when done, release the latch and roll it back under the loft out of the way. or maybe a piece of tubing inside of a larger piece of tubing, creating a telescopic beam, with a quick pin for the extended position and another quick pin position to lock the bag out of the way..  this would be pretty simple when you thing about it..  weld a couple small tabs on the front and rear of the smaller tube for stops so the bag cant pull all the way out of the tubing..Last edited by brucer; 11-13-2011 at 05:39 AM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:piece of 1in black pipe drill holes in 4-5 joist in the loft to put the pipe through the holes hang the bag somewhere in the middle

Reply:Don't know if you have built it yet, but perhaps a heavy gauge pipe as your stem, using the a larger size pipe as bushings for the pipe to run through, that way it can swing out of the way, folding from an extended position into the garage space to flat against the top wooden beam of the raised deck. Perhaps beef up on side of the ladder and have it rotate to behind the ladder when not in use? Post some pics when you finish.AC-180 Lincolnwelder circa '50's
Reply:Thanks everyone.  I've been too busy with work and other projects to get into this yet but lots of great ideas."These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Reply:I had my 100 lb bag hanging from a plate that spanned across 3 or maybe 4 joists and it wasnt good enough under heavy pounding. My sons room was directly above and he complained that his floor was moving like crazy. I ended up building a freestanding frame (like a an engine hoist) that had a base in a 90 degree fashion so I could put it in a corner. I ended up lagging it to the concrete floor, but it could have been weighted. I also made the mast height adjustable with a pin and series of holes, though I didnt need to...I never change the height

Reply:I think your best bet it a floor stand like this i mounted my heavy bag in my garage off of a  very solid8x8 inch wood beam and when i hit the bag the whole 2 story garage shakes like its coming down. Attached Images

Reply:Hardware, I am a USA boxing offical but have given up the game, old guy you know!Anyhow you want to be able to work all around the bag, so not close to walls or brackets.Just a thought here, I-Beam with a trolley set up on a hinge that would allow you to swing it out & lock it up when your hitting the bag, then out of the way when your done.  You can set pins on the swivel and the trolley to keep the bag in place.AEAD 200LE, Lincoln precision tig 185, Millermatic 251, Spectrum 625 extreme, Victor torch , Smithy 1220LTD. and  Do all C-4 band saw ,  Always adding.
