How many of you guys are set on fixed shade shields?I'm starting to think that me constantly using an A/D helmet is a bad habit to get into as I feel like I'm relying on it to much now..I'm in the middle of welding school at d mo!
Reply:I will raise my hand on fixed shade. Really if you learn to position yourself and hold it, you can drop your hood. I use a quality gold plated shade in my Jackson/Huntsman fiber/vulcanized hood.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:There are certain situations where I like the fixed shade. For most situations however, I prefer the auto dark.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I really want to try an auto lense but idk which one and definitely don't wanna shell out the cash for one and not like it so until I get the chance to try a quality a/d, i'll just stick to my hand-me-down AO Weldcool #10
Reply:I prefer fixed shade myself, Jackson big window with a gold lense and a pipeliner with a gold lense. Boss keeps offering to buy me a auto dark hood, may have to take him up on it one day
Reply:I started with an auto dark hood. It's a great tool but it wasn't always good when I had to weld outside. It would just flash on and off and ended up more of a pain than anything.I've been using a fixed shade with a gold lens for about 5 months and can't see myself ever going back to an auto dark.

Reply:I run a Pipeliner hood with a Gold #11Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Tozzi have u ever used an A/D hood! Do u like them?
Reply:I use both. I have a fixed shade 10, and an AD with adjustable shades 9-13. There are times when I like having the ability to change my shade depending on the job with a quick change of a dial. I love doing all of my tacking with the AD hood. Very quick not having to lift the hood when moving from place to place.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:I used an AD a couple times to see if I liked it.  it was fuzzy.  it was one of the cheaper ones.  I have the green lens in 10, 11, and 12.  I also have it in 5 for cutting.  I use a tiger hood from fibre metal.  I use a full hood for cutting as many times I am cutting over head and want a full hood instead of goggles.  I use an old jackson for my cutting hood.  I want a huntsman with a large window, but it is so convenient when laying under equipment to flip my window open and see.  There typically isn't room to flip a hood in those situations.  I can get all set and then flip my lens back down.  I know the old huntsman's hood had a lens slide, but I don't know if they still do.I may end up buying some gold lenses or a good AD, but right I am scrooge and don't like spending money so I may end up wishing in one hand and choking ole abe in the other.
Reply:I love my auto helemets, I have a speedglas 9100, and an optrel e680. I've been using auto helmets since I first started welding.   I also carry with my a fixed shade gold lens helmet, just in case the batteries die, or I break a helmet..  If you're going to buy an ad hood, buy the best, don't buy a harbor freight,or lowes special. You have one set of eyes don't abuse them..
Reply:fixed shade for 32 years. Tried an AD once, got a little wet one day from a sprinkle and stopped working. That was the end of that.
Reply:I had a hobart auto dark hood and hated that thing it flashed me so much when tig welding that i pulled out a 40 year old fixed shade and fell in love .  Now i use a fixed shade #11 gold lense on everything in a jackson big window thing is just great .   Jake
Reply:I like fixed shade outside arc welding.  Shade 10 for me.In the shop tig or mig - I like auto dark.  As said above - tacking with auto dark is great Dave J.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 08-03-2013 at 10:52 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:$1500 in ad and $100 in fs. I rather like the fixed shade.
Reply:I use a Digital Elite most of the time. Also have a FM Tigerhood that I use a green glass gold lens in(Hobart). Reply:All I use is fixed shade, it all I ever used and all I will continue to use. I never have to replace batteries and never get flashed!
Reply:I prefer fixed shade... I have perfected my hood pop arc strike in fraction of a second to almost synchronized... Not to say that requires more or less skill, just a preferenceSalSal
Reply:... I use a number 10 shade but also use tinted safety glasses so im probably using a 12... Tinted safety glasses will protect eyes from infrared light.. Clear glasses can block uv but you need a shade from infraredSalSal
Reply:I started with an auto dark. Learning stick, it helps. but when I started tig it kept flashing and got annoying I now use a fixed shade with a #10 gold lens for everything.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:Outdoors, usually a fixed. Indoors, or on small tig, AD. 90% of the time, it's the AD. For the fixed shield, I need the large window. Can't stand the small window. Frustrates me.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return. Some shops are too dark inside for me to see with an ad . I like my old gold mirror lense fixed shade. I dont break down when the battery goes dead. Never have to send it in to get it fixed. I can get a new one for 30 bucks. Not 300. Money doesnt come easy enough for that. But what do I know.
