what would be the best rods for welding bodys of vehicles? i would think GTAW but im not exactly sure?
Reply:Sheet metal body work is .023 solid wire and 75/25 gas mig territory. It's possible to tig it, but it's often very hard to get the surfaces as clean as they really need to be with tig. Mig tolerates some impurities like rust you really can't access that might be on the back of the original panels a bit better..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I use .035 er70 s2 mig wire when I Tig sheet metal... If you are referring to new car body the same will work...BUT...there are structural areas made of HSS,and Boran steel etc, that cannot (should not) be welded other than with spot welds... Super tight gaps will help keep your panel from distorting... You can also Mig but it creates a really hard weld that takes longer to grind down and can't be metal worked as well as Tig or Oxy weld... (I-CAR certified btw)Like DSW said clean shiny metal on both sides is a must... no paint, primer, undercoating, galvanizing etcLast edited by DemonSpeeder; 02-20-2013 at 08:47 PM.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:GMAW process only is my preferred process. I use my Longevity MigWeld 140 setup using C25 gas with a 3rd party .023 wire drive roller and .023 solid wire (e.g., Blue Demon, WeldCoat, etc.). It works perfectly for 20-16 gauge sheet steel, even though the Longevity manual says the minimum recommended wire is.025, but I've had no problems. Just ensure you use .6mm tips and a .023/.025 wire drive roller, if yours does not come with that particular option, and ensure you keep your bead runs to 1" to avoid warping or overheating.Agape GuyEverlast Power I-MIG 200 (dual voltage)Everlast PowerArc 200 stickHarbor Freight Titanium 125 Easy FluxHypertherm Powermax 30Way too many power tools
Reply:I have been doing a the welds on the cars with .035 70s6 ESAB mig 6 wire and was doing it with straight CO2 but went to C25/75 with the same wireI went to shovelon's today and got some of the ESAB easy grind wire to tryoutSome of what i am doing they had me O/A braze but i have a dc tig setup for the TB and have been using it with 1/16 70S2 and silicone bronzeIt is better to look at the threadhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=190231Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Gotta watch that distortion on the thin metal and body panels!
Reply:Move from one spot to another do not stay in one area,I have done it with 1/6" stick welding also.
Reply:You can also braze auto body work with silicon bronze and a TIG torch or O/A. Less distortion, less burn-through and plenty strong usually. And paint adheres fine to SiB.
Reply:Sil bronze with tig is much more controllable than O/AYou can also get sil bronze wire for migBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ??
