Hi,I am new on welding web forum. I recently purchase a old lincoln 225 ac arc welder. Do you have some trick or suggestion to make a clean looking and strong weld ? I want to use it to weld 1/4 steel.Tanks
Reply:Uhm, take a welding course at local community college?Different rods produce different looking welds.  Has to do with the outter covering, and how its run.But seriously, for safety reasons alone, take an instructor lead course.  It will be worth every penny you pay and then some.   The practice metal alone will be worth it.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX

Reply:I've never really welded on AC before, (just Tig) but here recently I did on a challenge. If you can get some Hobart 335A 6011 it runs real well on AC. Reply:Nice weld ! Arc weldind can be used to pressure piping or pressure hull ?
Reply:As you are a beginner.  If you must make a quality strong weld,  that is important ASAP,  Get yourself a any 1/8" stainless steel electrode,  Run it at about 100amps AC and just drag it slowly on the joint.  9 times out of 10 you will get a very good weld that you can depend on. Practice on scrap first, til you can get a good weld on your final workpiece. But there is nothing better than taking a stick course, or  a course at home from a welding book. Practice, you will only learn by doing. Reply:Tanks, tomorrow I start to do some test. I can post some pic of my work to have feedback.
Reply:Thick metal is just right for that welder. I use one of those machines at work. (I guess a DC stick machine just doesn't make $ense to the boss....)  The specific rod you use will dictate how it should be used. E6011 is a deep penetrating rod and can be manipulated by a whip and pause, E6013 which is a filler rod that can be drug at a 90* angle just skimming the surface of the work. I would start with those two until you feel more comfortable putting projects together. Attached ImagesCity of L.A. Reply:You might find they look even better when you have a real joint to follow and can really watch what the puddle is doing, just from my experience with learning

Reply:in my opinion 6013 is a very good rod to learn with. looks like you are off to a good start. get some 1/8" flat bar and start trying some butt welds. practice till you can't hold the stinger then practice some more. good luck and have fun....jimLast edited by jbmprods; 03-04-2011 at 12:46 AM.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:The good ol buzzbox tombstone lol hell its got alot of names lol. DC does weld alot smoother and cleaner. Honestly im not real familiar with the 6013 rod never used them . Mainly 6010 , 6011, 7018. To me the 7018 is the easiest to get technique for it has nice properties. Im not sure if they make a 7018AC as I mainly TIG weld. Like the others have said though the 6010 and 6011 rods are designed to eat and penetrate. Lil tip on those rods use a whip and pause style also if you think its getting to hot you can burry the rod in the puddle a sec and it will cool it momentarily for you to move on with the bead. Keep burning and show us the progress.. Its gonna be a fun ride my friend..

Reply:I'm a beginner, so I'm open to the experts to shoot down what I say if it is wrongbut since everyone is so helpful, I like to try to help also.I'd agree with everyone about the course - if you can get any type of course or friend whois an expert welder , it will kick start you - I'm not so lucky, so I had to swim on my own(still practicing). Have a look at my posts on arc welding - quite a bit of good info there and pointersto videos / pictures of how to identify good/bad welds and reasons. After a bit of reading,go to your local welding supply and ask for rods for AC. The 6013 and 7018 rods are for filling (not root runs) and give the best appearance.7018 is for higher tensile strenght AND needs to be kept in dry conditions. Here in Croatia, I spoke to the manufacturer and they said the 6013 is more than goodenough for all "normal" welding - that's what i use for practice. The 6013 is a drag rod i.e. you are virtually dragging it. 6010,6011 penetrate deeper but don't lookas good.Read the stuff and see if you can read the welds / get a feeling for what the currentsetting should be, control of arc lenght and speed. Make sure you get somegood habits about preparation for welding (run a 60 flap wheel on the surface to bewelded to clean it so it is shiny (6010,6011 will go through a lot of crud andrust but I think it's better to do a good job and do some preparation). If the surface is covered with oil/grease etc. clean that off before sanding so you're not rubbing it all in (alcohol, acetone etc. - try usingwhat is least "unhealthy")Check your leads, make sure you have good connections - everything adds up to theend result. And as far as I'm concerned, the most important - work safely - good helmet (autoI find best as you're seeing everything all the time), ventilated area / respirator, ear plugs, good gloves and body covered and let the fun begin
