I have grown to love welding with 7018 3/32 rod. I pretty much weld everything with itrepairing stuff or building things. It just lays down so nice and even and pretty. One bug I can't seem to fix is how to start it. I get the current just rite to make a greatlooking bead with no splatter and perfect penetration - but the first 1/2 inch is alwaysa little to cool and the bead is a little high. I can't really start with the arc length longer because that seems to cause a LOT of splatter and sometimes poriousity.( I'm assuming because the 7018 is designed to be used with the tip of the rod in thepuddle as oppsed to above it ... ) This dynosaur machine doesn't have a remote currentcontrol. Is there an old school fix ? Or should I change to a rod which uses a non-zeroarc length so I can start it with a slightly bigger arc length for the first 1/2 inch ? When I get the Dynasty up in about a week I'll be in high cotton ! But I may be usingother old machines ( like an old toombstone )I bet there are plenty of old school folks who have solved this bug !Thanks for any suggestion or fixes - Tim
Reply:No welding genius answer from me, as I am still learning the ins and outs of 7018 myself at school. But with my limited experience there is fine line between long arcing for too much time and not enough. Only thing that will solve this for you is hood time as it did for me.

Reply:Are your 7018 rods being stored in an oven? Makes a big difference. Try starting the rod 1 to 1 1/2 inches in front of the puddle / crater, and drag it back to the crater.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:as cep says preheat the first inch with the strike...
Reply:CEP:No, I don't have a rod oven. I don't usualy buy enough at a time. Usualy get the squareboxes of lincoln 7018ac from the big box stores. I keep it sealed on one of those plastic tubes with the screw lid and O-ring. It gets to 100% humidity for long periodsin the summer here (florida) so I get a couple of rods out and screw the lid back on tight each time. How bout a 20mm ammo can with some kind of cartrige heaterinside ? How hot does it have to be kept ? I don't buy more than one box at a time so they don't get too old.So I should try to do a reverse travel starting about 3/4 inch in and drag back to the beginning where the actual weld bead would start. Is there a trick to getting an arcbut not depositing much rod so I don't get a lump under the bead making it too big ?Or do I just king of do a fairly fast travel to keep the desposition down ?????I will experiment with it at my next opportunity to use some 7018.I don't normaly like to pre-heat on a normal bead just due to inconvienence andit may just be equivilent to using a higher current. I rarely have a bead more than 4 inchesat a time so preheating the beginning and not the middle would he hard.I'll try the backstep method and see how that does !Thank yall !TimP.S. Love to meet your avatar ! (a real person? ) Could you make her come alive - solidworks animation 3D model maybe ???????PPS I hope she Tig welds aluminum too !Last edited by jethro; 03-08-2011 at 02:18 AM.
Reply:Get yourself some better quality rod from an actual LWS. I don't know if they ment preheat the steel or the rod, but you preheat the rod by doing what CEP said. Just take some time to practice your starts and stops on some scrap and you'll get better.
Reply:if you can start up higher in the weld zone and drag back to the end of your last weld bead this will help the rod will be hotter when you tie into the last bead.if its nor a option i will take and grind a small concave spot at the end of the bead so the cold start will have a little more room to lay flat on the start. After the arc has died the weld remains
Reply:I am a pipe welder and i always start an inch above my tie in and drag it down, round the tie in and start with the weave or stringer what ever im doing. The 7018 ac runs a little more violent than what dc would run an would have a little more spatter and sometimes a higher center... The 7018 ac from hobart runs alright if you have a tractor supply. Also try the lincoln rod from home depot if you have no real welding store around. The stuff works for me in a pinch.... You can also try a metal sealed box with a 100w light bulb in it. Its not the best but also works in a pinch. Hope this helps
Reply:x2 on the Hobart 7018... It runs so nice, and is even okay on AC. People say the Lincoln Excalibur rod is the best, but I personally don't notice a huge difference.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Get rid of that 7018 ac (H8R), its junk. I have welded with it many of time and it welds 1000% worse tha regular 7018 (H4R)...even though it says it can be welded with DC+ don't try, the slag will not come off without a needle gun and the bead looks like crap.
Reply:sr20ssteve:I have been using lincoln 7018ac in 3/32 from HD. (run on dc) I havn't had a problem with it at all.If I do my job I can get a 8 inch long bead that is beautufully uniform and the slag willstart warping as it cools and it will usualy peel its self off in one piece.Tried the hobart version too. Seems to weld OK but the slag sticks much harderto the bead. Aslo the bead doesn't seem as smooth and easy to lay down as lincoln.I'll be interested to see how the dynasy does using the pedal remote for stick.TimThe back-drag thing for restarting on pipe sounds like the proper old school fix foran old school machine. ! ( I'm not quite old but I'm old school ...... )
Reply:when you strike the arc pause for a few seconds for the heat to build and even turn your heat up about 5-10 amps. i like to run hot with stick ie: with 1/8 rod on 3/16 plate ill run the heat at about 125- 135ampsWELD TO LIVE LIVE TO RIDEA bad welder blames his equipment, a good weldor can lay a perfect bead on any thing
