i've got a question, aimed specifically towards the pros out there... What has been the worst job that you have to do welding on? just curious... trying to start some conversation.here's a picture that i found. i'd love to be there and work on it, but i'd hate to do the welding required for some of those joints...Later,Andy
Reply:oh $hit that be fun welds clean material. I've layed on my back all day running over head 6011 repairing a shaker table frame. Laying in about a foot of dust and dirt not even having room enough to flip my helmet down. Some of the welds i had to to place the helmet up in an area off my head and look through it from like 2 ft away. How would you like to be doing that. Did i fail to mention this was in the foundry and was about 140 degrees. --Gol'
Reply:stick welding the underside of a doorway hatch 3 " off the  floor ,in a hyperbaric chamber, while looking at the weld with a mirror.

Reply:This was one. Armor plating a shipping container to put on a PLS and use as a gun truck in Iraq 2004.I think the nastiest one tho was the full garbage truck with a broken shackle, after it had sat out in 120 degree heat for 2 days [i]If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
Reply:Oh ya...there is nothing better than laying under a garbage truck in the middle of the summer..."What just fell on me? Eh, just a couple maggots"

Reply:Rust! I effing hate rust and it seems everything I have to work on is covered in rust! Chisel, grind, nope can't weld there, cut off, move, repeat. I love working on clean new turbo plumbing like pictured above. That sh!^s a cake walk compared to rust repair.
Reply:Not professional welder but.Manure spreaders are pretty bad.Hanging by your legs upside down on a tower ,helmet won't stay down, vision gets wonky from the blood rushing into your head.Laying on wet ground under a combine,in the dark, with a storm blowing dust into your helmet, and getting the crap repeatedly shocked out of you by the PTO generator  powered  buzz box Forny welder.Hard to do nice welds.

Reply:We relined the inside of a pipe with copper plate.  I had to inspect the before and after.  The finished ID was 17-1/2".  After you got past the first elbow, you were all on your own, no practical rescue possible without cutting the pipe.  Strangely, I loved it at the time.

Reply:Tucked under a bridge to welded a bearing pad that didn't get put on at the beam manufacture.  3/8" over head weld, 18" long only 3 3/4" high off the the concrete, 6" from the back wall of the concrete abutment.  Did it all lying on my back looking out of one eye with my arm stretched out as far as I could reach.  I had 12 of them to do. Each one took 8 hours.  Normally takes me 2 hours on a bad day when we weld the bearings to the beams while they are still on the trailers.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom IronwokersI hope you backcharged the hell out of the fabricator!
