Got the idea from our buddy gordon stephenson's and his thread shown here. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=62590  Neighbor next door at my shop sold to the guy across the street and they have been clearing out stuff over the last few months. This has been laying next to the fence for a few weeks atleast and i've wanted it. Finally had some time to talk him down to the price of free. So i grabbed the loader and got it over to the shop. Opened the valve and let it bleed out for awhile as i took the valve apart and spent sometime and more time filling the thing with water. Turns out after i cleaned the label its 250 gallons. I'm planning to make it a openish fireplace for the patio any suggestions would be appreciated. Millermatic DVIMillermatic 251Older buzz box Cheap 120 welder
Reply:Best suggestion I can give you, is to cut it in two pieces at the weld/seam, and make two firepits out of it.Here is a suggestion: http://www.firepitart.com/#
Reply:well here's my contribution:  commercial propane tank cut down to size, stainless grill top, adjustable vent heat control, removable burn plate allows sweeping of ash into 3"x16" round tin pan that slides under the pit.(not shown)  I used spring handles from home depot chipping hammers for the grill & the vent.(cheaper than ordering just the springs online)  If I had it to do over, I would've made the burn guard wider and would've welded the legs directly to the burn guard for added stability while swinging the grill to the side when food is ready or to load more fuel.  Still, the thing works great as is and it's plenty stable enough.  also thinking to add a rotisserie.  hope this helps. Reply:I'd cut half the top out and turn it into a door with slots cut in it (straight or fancy is up to you, and what you have available to cut it with) I'd cut matching slots in the half that is still connected. than hinge it some how and start burning. I only suggest this because I'm not a huge fan of open top fire pits in a porch setting. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:I'm wanting to do it more fire place with a stack coming out the top. i will sketch up something in the AM on what i'm thinking.Millermatic DVIMillermatic 251Older buzz box Cheap 120 welder

Reply:That is a very impressive grill my friend,Nice size too,Looks to be very well made and the price you negotiated was just a bonus.Lovely piece of equipment that will last for years.I like the swing away feature on the grill but the only downside could be that it drips fat onto the patio etc,I think I would have preferred to make the grill adjustable for height,Wish I could drop on a similar tank in the future.Last edited by gordon stephenson; 01-25-2012 at 05:21 AM.Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:heya gordo, 3"x16" round tin pan slides under the pit to catch/sweep ash and drippings.(not shown) The removable burn plate assures airflow through ash build up while preventing small ember drop through.  Mostly, we use it as a fire pit but it's an "wood burning grill" during open fire bans. Landman, what ever you come up with, make it easy to clean & easy to use. That was the most important thing for me after observing our neighbor fighting w/ his.  He rarely uses his, we use ours all the time.   For your needs, you could make it look kinda like one of those mexican terracotta fire places. weld some sort of stack on top, cut an opening large enough to get a burn plate in and out.  Maybe weld a similar burn guard with welded legs?Last edited by badknot; 01-25-2012 at 08:48 AM."Steel is weak. Reply:God damn I'm jealous!!!!!! I can't find stuff like that around here. That is awesome! Maybe a nice 1/4 section, or less cut out and used as a pivoting door. Or cut a circle out like the hatch on a diving bell. Get Steampunk with the design of it. Brass rivets to make it look like shaped plates riveted together. Port holes with Pyrex glass.Could do some cool, dimpled, lunar-lander legs for it.  http://www.wingnutdesigns.com/gallery/UFOTable.htmlThese would work with the Steampunk look too.Or a big bug.Make a big pole tripod and suspend it from chain in the middle. Or a big concrete base with a single curved "arm" to hang it on. Like those hanging rattan chairs.  http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/38...tan_chair.htmlBut make the curved stem out of or to look like I-beam. Or even a bridge type lattice structure.I can go on.............200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:too much time...just started sketch'n your "convertible ballpit" lol.  you'll need to add swing limits also.  oh yeah, make height adjustable too; trailer jacks?  alternatively, you could just make one big door that exposes everything. look forward to see'n your finished product...whatever it is.  can i have it if you give up? just roll it over. b Attached ImagesLast edited by badknot; 01-25-2012 at 08:31 PM."Steel is weak. Reply:I really like that idea and pic. I sat down and sketched this up a few mins ago and here's what i've got. see what you think. i'm not the greatest artist ever.  I would like to find several more of these or the long tube ones and make some cooker/pits/fireplaces. Reply:Looks fantastic! One thing i forgot while sketching.  The grill on my pit warps slightly upward under heat due in part to the expansion of the single lower perpendicular stainless rib...so if you were to do a swinging lid, etc allow about an 1/4"-1/2" half inch gap between two halves.  Weld flanges to cover them and also to provide a stop.  you could set a grill inside but you'd have trouble adding fuel while cooking or just go w/o.  The swing function on my grill makes it really easy to use and clean, which is really important for me. b Attached Images"Steel is weak.
