The joy to share with your kid in metal working with chainmail

I have been wanting to try something for a while to make a wallet chain for myself so i did some looking around on youtube and learned how to make a box chain design with chainmail. made a jig to wrap some wire then cut the individual links out then got started. 5 rows into the project i noticed my 11 year old son watching so i asked if he wanted to do it. he said yes then i handed him the entire project. made his world shine. this will be his wallet chain and since i do some leatherwork on the side i will have to make him a wallet to go with it. Reply:I dont have kids, but as a kid, I had done about a few sq/m of 4 to 1. I had to stop as I had no power tools to wind coils and my hands were having some problems holding on to the rings. I had lots of fun doing knitting chain. I should have tried to get aluminum wire, but that was pretty expensive for me at the time, having only little of an allowance then. good to see it of the youngin.

Reply:A friend makes his own chainmail and does some medieval battle demonstrations. He had a "flail" (it's like a chainmail whip) that kept coming apart due to the rings stretching open. I spent a few hours tig welding the rings shut. I clipped them in a very small pair of vice grips (one ring at a time) and then fusion welded them with the tig. Some were stainless, some were mild steel so I just fused them instead of dabbing a little filler in there. They came out great and he was really pleased. Reply:I cant believe that back in the day and some people today who make chain, alternatively riveted each link. Definitely some work there.
