Watched a sub contractor in a store/sub shop try and fix a 3 basin SS sink.  I have done a couple and they make me sweat.  In this state, they have to be smooth as in cannot trap bacteria.  This is not my weld.   Once the contractor gave up on sealer, he  brought in a hobart 140 and welded the sink.  I don't know what he had for gas or wire.   Its been like this for a while.I gotta repeat, its not my weld.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Almost looks as if your looking at the back of the weld and a heap of sugaring.Definatly an ugly weld.
Reply:Was it welded from the picture side or is that the back of the weld?
Reply:Picture side.  That is the bead.He is probably home building a trailer  with the same machine.   Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:No way..... who let the geese off the pond?........ lemme guess, they want you to fix it?
Reply:Solar Flux, check it out.
Reply:Where your weld?I have done few also with my maxstar 140.They make me a little nervous also.
Reply:Man that's gonna stink when that sh!t gets hot when welding(after you grind whatever that is off, of course). I just fixed an alum rack for a deli/catering place. Reply:Originally Posted by dave powelsonGrind and blend all you want, the SS is sorely degraded, presumably with some really goodsugaring underneath; and it will still have a crack-probably a bunch more hairline cracks from the welding and the ensuing grinding, plus pits, etc.IOW--that sink is scrap.David-suggest you decline the job.
Reply:Its not my job.  I was not asked to repair it.   I would not.  I said it twice in my first post, I did not weld that.   Its where I eat lunch   and buy my fuel.  (get gas? )I worry about a little discoloration when I do these.  I tigged one last friday morning at a different place.  They are a b*tch to do with the right equipment.  Just saw it and took some photos for you folks.   I can't believe anyone would leave something like that behind or anyone would PAY to have that done.  Yep, the sink is ruined.DavidLast edited by David R; 01-27-2012 at 06:55 AM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:If the sink were removed and the nasty bits cut out and replaced in-shop, could that be cheaper than replacing the sink? They'll need to pull it before their next inspection so it'll have to come out anyway. If it's not salvageable it'd make a nice shop sink...
Reply:Which one does she look like?http://www.webstaurantstore.com/1563...ainboards.htmlIf the sink was worth enough, I guess you could always pull it out from where it's installed, cut out the bird poop plus some area around it, cut and bend a new piece to replace the excised portion, and then properly weld and blend that in...
