This has been a project that's been ongoing while the work on the trailer progressed. It was done on rain days, or real cold days. I was able to finish it up today while waiting for partsA full set of 4" cargo strap winches, with the unique-one of a kind Uranis Inc. Modifications. These are the usual weld-on winches, but I will never know exactly where I'll need a strap for hauling various sizes of round bales. I need winches that can be temporarily attached anywhere along the side rail on the trailer. And I don't like the commercially available ones...they're cheeeeeezy. And I don't want to weld a track onto the side rail, it can warp the rail.3/4 flat stock was slotted, then an angle milled to match the shape of the channel the side rail is made ofBolt holes were then cutAnd the welding began. This is Lincoln Excalibur 5/32 at mid range somewhere around 160amps DC using the Ranger machine. The Ranger has sweet arc characteristics, and the Excalibur is phenominal. It's a better rod/machine combination than I am a welderIf you're familiar with the shape of channel, you'll see why all the fancy milling had to be. The winch lip will perfectly match the channel lip, and the set bolts will meet the channel surface at a nice 90 degree angle, which makes them very secure. Reply:are you going to have any issues with the strap rubbing on the rail? Did you build it that way to minimize the tortional stresses of having it mounted horizontally? Reply:That's a pretty bead Samm. Nice work. Do you plan on only installing them as you use them, or will they ride around on the trailer all the time?I'd be scared of them vibrating loose and falling off. With the strap in place, Obviously it will work dandy, and they can't go anywhere.
Reply:My only thoughts are you still going to have to place them between the cross members? Reply:Thanks for the replies, I like to read them, it's cool stuff these forums.Some of the questions...............1. I am limited to the spaces between the crossmembers for instalation, but it's about 2" of "dead" space as the junior I beams have 2" flanges2. I've never had much luck with taping mild steel when it has to take a lot of torque, the threads tend to distort too much. But on the other hand I'm sure I've ruined some of the mechanical/metalurgical properties of the nuts when I weld them on. It's sort of a Catch 22 (for anyone welding nuts like this, it's a good idea to do the weld while the bolt is in the nut, this helps to protect the nut from distortion, you can spray the threads with anti spatter to protect the threads, also...use the same bolt for all welds because the heat will probably affect it so it'll be a throwaway when you're finished)3. It would be almost impossible to properly weld the inside section of the lip. The lip is an exact fit to the channel it's mounted on. I suppose you could bevel the space between the bolt holes, but if your weld in any way protruded into the machined area it wouldn't fit the trailer. Also, a good weld will resist force in any direction tension/compression/shear/and pullout. In a design like this, the force is concentrated at the root of the angle, not on the edge of the lip. It's why the exact fit was needed. The weld also wraps around the sides of the tab, this should give adequate reinforcement."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/ |
