I was trying to make and cut a 12" circle, and didn't have a good compass.  I went to the local boxmart and found one that looked like it came out of a cereal box.  I know all the tricks with string & Pencil,   and  board / nail/ and pencil, but really wanted something more accurate.  On the cheap compasses, the arms on it wouldn't tighten properly, and I struggled to make a perfect circle.  I went to Office stores and Hardware stores, only to be disappointed by the cheap and 'small diameter' compasses.   So I made one out of scrap (& out of anger)..... and it works like a DREAM!   I plan on making more of different sizes.   I should have done this years ago.   I'll post a pic of it, and the instructions I put on You Tube, and I'll try to drop a link down so folks can check it out.  I know there are good compasses out there, but the prices are hard to justify since I'm just a hobby welder.  NOTE:  I welded a small visegrip on in order to secure the 'swing'... i thought about a wing nut on a bolt, but I could imagine the arms moving as I tighten the nut.  The visegrip clamps it where it's measured.  Sure it looks silly, but who cares.  Very functional! Here's the You Tube link:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Z7Tox39GM[/ame] Attached Imageshttp://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:Good idea. I use a framing square but yours looks more accurate.Tim Beeker.
Reply:If you need to do large sizes regularly, look into building a beam compass. They are stupid easy to build and if you make the beam a standard size, you can simply go up to a longer beam to make larger circles.https://www.google.com/search?tbm=is...74l739l7.2l9l0.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:If you have a circle cutter for your torch, you can make another head to accept a pencil or soap stone, fairly easy.
Reply:Easiest way I've found to scribe a circle on metal is put two sheetrock screws thru a wood 1x2 set on the desired radius. Those screws are so hard they will scribe almost anything. I also center punch the center for the one screw to sit in.                                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:good idea. One thing I found very useful is old slats from vinyl vertical blinds for large circles and radius, and for parallelograms (like for cutting sheetrock for skylight tubes). The flat vinyl is great, drill holes where needed for pencil/scribe and a centering screw, reuseable too.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
