Noobs first Tig Welds

Here are pictures of my first Tig beads with filler rodI am looking for input to make me better. Reply:They all look fairly good for 1st attempts. Many look a bit cold (#1, #3, end of #5). The last 2 look the best, (#4) looks close to what you want, (#5) looks good at the begining, but then you backed off on the heat too much. #2 looks like it was too hot, or possibly the plate got too hot running the other beads, it's hard to tell. I see what looks like a haze around the welds. Thats often a sign you contaninated the tungsten and kept welding. Only seeing a tiny bit makes it hard to tell just when that might have happened even if it makes seeing individual beads well. As soon as you contaminate the tungsten, STOP and regrind. I'd also suggest you run longer beads. I can't tell exact size without a reference, but I'd guess they were 2" to at most 3" long tops. Try to go 4" minimum. Be sure you let the plate cool between welds or use more than one practice piece. If you don't, it will act like you kept upping the amps. I've seen guys who can't understand why they can run 2 or 3 nice beads, then can't run one because they switched to a cold plate for the last. I tell the students to try and not run more than 2 beads to a plate and then not run another on that plate until they can put thier bare hand on the steel after it's cooled.All in all not bad. Keep practicing..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Grind your metal shiny retry and report back. Also at the end of your bead back off heat slowly and it will stop getting craters.Last edited by smilexelectric; 04-06-2011 at 06:26 PM.
Reply:Turn it up to 135 or so and use the foot pedal. You will have a lot more control over your heat and can adjust as necc. if you are using the foot pedal then switch over to 2T

Reply:Yea i was lookin on an ipod at first some looked like they had some scale. Still they are not that bad, more hood time and you will be good. You might want to look into the student package from Miller, its a great publication.
