Made some Heavy Duty shelves for the garage with a little 6ft work bench in middle.   I know pics are small and if you guys like I can put bigger.  Basically its all 2" square tube(14g) with 2x6's as cross boards with 1/4" 1.5" angle iron in middle board for added support.  I'm not totally finished yet.  The brightness in middle is from a light I hanged up. Reply:looks great...what do you figure you have invested??
Reply:The pics don't do it justice, but its roughly 16ft in length and 8ft tall.   In Metal Alone it was a little over 200.00 and I had to use 13 2x6x12' lumber which roughly came out to around 70.00 in just wood and thats because I haven't finished. I want to put boards on TOP as well to store our christmas bins LOL.  The attic is already filling up. Probably around 300.00 when its all said and done.  I wanted to go a step further and make them adjustable but my dad convinced me otherwise.  He said how often would you actually adjust them.
Reply:Looks really nice. I planned on doing this a few years ago in a former shop. I would like to see your construction details in some close-up / larger pictures.Thanks,-Jim
Reply:No problem Jim.  I'll take them with a real camera and not my phone.   As for construction details it was mostly in my head.  They are only 2 Feet wide.  My Goal was to try and put as much stuff on the shelves to try and get 2 cars parked in the Garage.   If I had to to do it all over, I wouldn't have used the 2" square tube for the cross beams on the larger section of shelves.  It was overkill.  On the smaller shelves on right side I used angle.  you'll see in the closeups i post later today.   To minimize wood cost the 2x6's are spaced out so I only needed 3 of them in each shelf.
Reply:Nice shelves, waay overkill for what I see on them.  Do they come apart, or do they come with the house if you ever move?

Reply:Very nice!  I need to do something like that in my garage.
Reply:Originally Posted by DSWThe advantage of adjustable shelves is that you can  tighten up the spacing to match the contents. Granted you usually will not change it once you load them, but it's nice to be able to tweak the spacing when you load at first. It's especially true when working with boxes or storage containers of fixed sizes. I've seen too many guys F up the measurements and end up just a bit too short ( usually forgetting to add in the shelf material or the box lids) or they end up with 3-4" of wasted space on each shelf which can add up to an extra shelf of stuff on a large shelf system.I'm not knocking your design, just making an observation from someone who has spent years building shelving systems, both in commercial and residential settings. In reality it's not easy to do adjustable shelves from scratch and make them work well unless you plan on using a lot of bolts and perforated angle. My choice is usually the double hole track and standard systems like Closetmaid sells. That's what I have in my shop and storage areas, but it's NOT cheap. A 6' set of double hole shelves I built for a customer this fall for their shed at the shore, 5 standards, 20 brackets cost roughly $200 in materials and we already had the wire shelving to use on hand left over from doing her garage and pantry. For what you spent, looks like you have a good solid set of shelves for a lot less than the cheap box store "garage" shelving systems. Most today are so thin and flimsy I won't even assemble them for customers. I'm betting you spent 1/2 to 1/3 of what even the "heavy duty" garage shelves would have cost you and yours will be a lot stronger.
Reply:looks great 3/4 plywood is also a great material for the shelving  especially if you have angle iron spanning the middle.bobs77vet/37ford4drEastwood digital TIG200HH190Lincoln Invertec 155sLincoln weldpak 100sears/craftsman (lincoln) 50a 240v buzz boxO/A rig Harris gaugesnexion cut 50 dxchicago electric (HF) 240v spot welder
Reply:that's a great job you did there.can i request a corner shot of one of the corners of the shelf?is the whole thing welded together? or are there bolts/nuts involved so you can take it apart?
