Hello sparkies,I have a project that needs expert answers. I have an 8ft 2" shaft for a stationary machine that runs this shaft through a bearing pad. Over the years the bearing pad has worn down the metal in its care . It apperas to be worn about 1/32nd in the bearing pad area. So if you looked at it side whats, you would see the drops down should on each end of the bearing pad.I have the pad cleaned and supported on 4 places. My question: I Do I weld the shaft axially (winding it around the shaft) or do I make a line on one side the width of the wear pattern and put the same mark on the other side as well. I would then weld longatuidly with the shaft, one pass on a side, then turn it 180 degrees and do the other side etc and then flip shaft over 180 degrees and weld a new pass next to the older one.SO which is better ?? if this was the shaft that carried your mother in laws boat and must never be down.!!!!Axially or longitudly ??? THanks guys/galsWWoW
Reply:If you have a positioner set it at 90 degrees and have at it...If not then yes go around the shaft BUT!!!!! do NOT weld the "Side" of the wear edge just fill in the middle at first..Try to keep the weld about 1/16" away from the sides until the shaft is done THEN fill in the sides..Keeps the shaft straight that way...Weld in the side first? You will just bend the shaft where you started the weld...How do I know?......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Maybe it's the machinist in me, but.....Wouldn't truing up the worn portion and fitting a new bearing to the smaller shaft portion be more practical?Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
