have anyone here ever done tounge and grove welding on stainless steel pipe? the reason i ask is, well several reasons.when i Tig carbon pipe you can't tell where my tacks start or end and i have what all pipe welders wants. a wedding band all around inside with no starts or finish wth under a 1/16"-1/8" rise. but thats carbon.now when i do stainless steel pipe i can too put a wedding band inside of its about 1/16". i'm still working on trying to smooth my root to my tacks. i worry about burning my tacks but everyone tells me not to worry i recieved some great pointers before i left yesterday. so i'll try them monday.now one of my teachers who's a journey man says there's more than one ways to weld. he explain while my roots are picture perfect but there will come a time when when reguardless how bueatiful they are my employer will demand somethig different. like wanting me to runs a flush root. while it seems easy just wash the walls and you can pull back the root i hate washing the walls unless i'm doing a hot pass/filler. i like to make sure my root is in there. so he told me about another way, a counter bevel. a kind a tounge and grove. now theres two ways to do this in the sense of welding it. one filler wire and the other just fusing it. fusing it is freakig hard. but didn't like either. for the simple fact it looked thin if you ask me almost like a suck back but then again i only did it twice. maybe a little more practice i can get it nice.here's some pics.here's my Sch 10 3" pipe on my purge block with a 1/16" counter bevel.now here my other pipe beveled. a 1/16" gap. now you add wire to tack but after tacking you have to fuse the two pipe. but i couldn't do it it kept blowing out even at 50 amps. so i add wire instead. nice and gold.here's what i didn't like, it looks like suck back, very thin yet they say its good.now here's my cap on 2G, before you state about colour of pipe. i didn't toasted, and it's 3" one side and 4" on the other. when we weld a pipe we return it to the supply room and they give use another pipe cut so someone else toasted. kind a like when you're on a job you turn in your rods stubs before you get fresh rods.please add comment and opinions, but remember opinions are like arseholes. everyone has one and they all stink. lol.it's trust and character I need around me. You know, who you choose to be around you lets you know who you are. One car in exchange for knowing what a man's made of? That's a price I can live with. - Hans
Reply:Kind of hard to read all your post as it's been cut off...if root tacks are a problem then why not just use bridge tacks and grind them out as you go? would also save purging the pipe to tack it, but I hear Argon's cheap over there That fusing technique sonds crazy (might try it though for a laugh), can't see how it can be done without suck back, which as you say, is never good.Last edited by Baila La Pinza; 04-15-2011 at 01:08 PM.
