does anyone know if you can still buy a silver coated welding lens?thanks for your time.
Reply:I'm not trying to be hostile, but it might be helpful if you posted more details, including a better description (eg for what kind of welding?) and also your location. The latter can be permanently added to your posts by clicking the "User CP" symbol at the top left.I am not familiar with "silver  coated lenses". The old lenses were deeply colored glass, made using various metallic compounds that produced the color and which adsorbed the needed wavelengths. Later, lenses with a thin gold (alloy?) coating were sold; these reflected most of the light instead of adsorbing it. Is this what you were referring to, or is there another type I don't know about? Now, many lenses are "electronic" 'auto darkening'.BTW, I also appreciate posters taking the time to use good spelling, punctuation and grammar; not everyone here can or cares, but I think that, if someone asks for advice, it shows more responsibility on his part. JMHO.
Reply:I'll do my best when it comes to correct grammar and punctuation.I'm learning some pipe welding (6" steel, schedule 40 i believe) from an retired pipe welder.  I do pretty well on the TIG root and fill pass, most likely because I TIG all day during the week, but I do struggle when it comes to the stick portion.Anyways, today my teacher let me use his old helmet with a silver coated lens.  I noticed that I was able to see much more detail while I was welding.   He told me this was because the silver coating reflected certain UV rays.  He gave me a gold coated lens, so I was trying to return the favor and get him a silver one.  He mentioned to me that he preferred the silver over the gold and also told me they stopped making these silver coated lens's.  Which is why I came here to see if anyone knew if they were still made and where they might be purchased.

Reply:I noticed a difference when I went from the green colored lens to the silver.  I haven't tried the gold lens yet.I met him through my current job, he's a teacher at one of tech schools in the area.  He was looking for some extra money just before x-mas and started working 2nd shift, I was working doubles at the time.  I mentioned to him my desire to learn pipe welding and he offered his knowledge.  I'm EXTREMELY grateful I met him, if I didn't meet him I'd be stuck at my current job.  Now I can see the light....
Reply:You should try the gold lens and let us know the difference.
Reply:I haven't seen a silver lense in 20 years, one of the older guys I worked with used them.  The silver layer was sandwiched between 2 panes of glass, & was really heavy.  He used to get them from Airgass, but that was a century ago.  Good luck, & keep us posted if you find em!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:I had a silver lens in the early 1970s. Got in a big hurry one day changing clear lenses, got them out of order. Ruined the silver lens. If you do find a source for them please post back, I think the silver lenses were just as clear as the O/A Cool blue!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Im not familiar with Silver Welding Lenses but, I do know that Silver Nitrate is used for auto darkening prescription lenses. The same principle worked for antique photography. The Silver Nitrate would get xposed to light and then darken on a glass substrate to create a black and white image/picture on a glass pane.
