I Started my own Welding Business,  I was doing mainly repairs,  I got a Customer who need rails on her front steps to sell her house.  These are my first Rails EVER!!  I used Flux Core, and basic tools, (Until I can afford bigger machines)There just fabricated and welded, I am going to be painting them and installing them,  I will update pictures later on in the week. Fabbing Process.1 Down 1 to Go.Opinions and input are appreciated. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Smaller, better, pictures would be better. When making the second side, if it's the exact same rail, I make it on top of the first, using spacers as necessary to set the pickets on. I cut all stock for both sides at one time, tack the first one, lay the second one on top of the first, reomove, and weld up.I don't think you have the break/bend of the stairs at the top landing in the right place, it usually is in line with the nose of the landing.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:looks like ***..seriously.. your camera skills suck.. but it seems you have good fab skills. lol!  good job.www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:Thanks.  That was taken off my stupid camera phone.  My digital camera wasnt on me at the time,  When I post the pics of them Installed and painted I will use the Digital Camera. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:been there. lol!www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:Does the lower end of the cover rail mount to something?  Where I live the cover rail has to have a return to it - it can't be hanging out into space like that.If you're not aware of it, you might want to check out a copy of the International Building Code from your local library if you don't have one.  It's good for giving you general guidelines for handrailings / steps / etc.  Covers lots of little nitpicky details that make me hate this type of work.  Then talk to your local building inspector to be sure what you're making will pass your local code.  I have a 2006 version of the IBC here, and it's probably time to update.
Reply:I those pics there not finished,  I am going to be taking the last part of the handrail and bending into a "Lambs Tongue". So there will not be a 1' section hanging out in the open.  I have read the code book,  the rail will be installed into concrete stairs with Hydro Static cement, and the top will be mounted to the building. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Congratulations on your first rail.As Tessdad stated, The easement (bend/break) is important.  It keeps the step rail and guard rail at the same height.  Otherwise you will have instances where the step rail will  come out too high, sometimes higher than the guard.
Reply:Heres a pic of Them Primed ( Another Cell Phone Pic ).  I figured I would post a pic while the primer was drying before Paint.  Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Here is the Rails in the Installation process, and the final product.  Home Owners were very happy!!(Im taking the pictures)  Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Few more, With DIGITAL CAMERA this time.  The black rails are covered in dust from the drop cloth I used for trasnporting them, (I washed the rails off later on)Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Looks Good For First Set - Could You List What It Took To Do This - Metal Size And Length Thanks
Reply:I used...20' of "Top Rail".24" of 1" Chanel.20' of 1" 11GA Tubing.60' of 1/2" Solid Sqaure Ballisters.Materials wise there very simple. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

Reply:Nice work on you first rail.  Perhaps, if you don't consider the bottom riser/tread a step, then his rail is good.  Otherwise the step would need to be modified, too. What are you doing with the tiny drill in the first installation photo.
Reply:Originally Posted by dave powelsonThe code wants the railing to terminate with a 12" return--in front of that first step. You've got it starting, back up on that first step. Maybe 'that's what the customer wanted".....but it's not to code.Since the railing was required by somebody, in order to sell the house, let's hopethis just skates by.

Reply:Originally Posted by app-ironworksllcDave I think you're half right. The foot level return is for commercial properties. It may also apply to multi-family bldg's, too, like condos and apartments. I'm sure one day it will apply to single family residences, too. Of course I'm going by IBC2009 for NC. YMMV.It's almost, but not quite, deep enough to count as a landing. Generally a landing has to be as deep as the stair is wide to fall under those rules.
