This may be a girly question. Sorry!  I am wondering about UV damage from UV exposure. I am not trolling! How do you protect your skin--neck/chest area, etc? Can I put an 50SPF on areas that aren't covered by my clothes? I really have no clue. I just don't want a wrinkly neck.
Reply:Short answer is no. Cover up exposed areas. If the helmet is too short, put a flap on the bottom - or button your shirt all the way up Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:wrinkly skin??? Id be more worried about skin cancer... Like said above, your best bet is to cover your skin. So a shirt or jacket with a collar and a helmet that covers your neck are a must- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:Yes, cover up. I have a leather hood neck bib clipped to the bottom side. After time you will learn to cover up and keep cool or just deal with it.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Of course I wear a collared shirt buttoned all the way up! I still felt a bit of a burn after class this past week. I was thinking that maybe there is some kind of balaclava/turtle neckey type thing I can buy? I haven't seen any. It would be much more comfortable than a leather cover. I don't want skin cancer either! It is ok for me to threadjack my own thread right? I learned early that women's apparel is lame and not necessary. Some of the guys in my class wear denim shirts. Is that really ok? I am kind of a safety maniac and only bought flame resistant, bulky shirts. I was wearing regular crappy jeans that I no longer wear outside of the shop but found that spatter really hurts! Any recommendations for shirts and pants? I would love snap buttons. Buttons are soooo annoying.
Reply:You may actually need the flap on your helmet. It's not uncommon to get reflected light off the top of your chest. Reply:Anywhere you are covered with protective clothing should be fine. If you are burned in those areas after wearing the "protective" clothing it must not be very protective. Replace that clothing with something that does what it should. If the only place you have trouble with is your neck/head it could be that you need a longer hood or some leather hanging from the bottom of your hood to cover you better like the others have said.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:I have a Nomex  neck sock that I use when need be. I bought mine from Simpson racing equipment, but can be had for less than Simpson money from most fire supply stores here is a picture of one I found online. Nice thing about Nomex is it is light weight, don't get me wrong it only cuts down on UV light exposesure (yup misspelled) unlike good leathers which block it. It is much cooler and way more flexible. But it is dang near arc proof and doesn't burn easily.(I trust it to give me enough time to escape a fully burning stock car)Millermatic 30aMillermatic 210Miller thunderbolt 225 ac/dc/ccMiller HF15-1-wg tigLincoln ranger 10(honda powered)Cebora 175 mig Too damn many tools but oddly not enough......
Reply:Denim shirts are fine, but they do still burn. but when you get to overhead I would put leathers on, if you are stick or mig welding. Tig it shouldnt be a problem. I cant help you on pants, I will say that if you wear ones with lots of frays on the ends, be careful. They like to catch fire! I found some cheaper jeans that fit me well and are comfortable and still hold up well... One you burn enough holes in them get some more. A leather apron might help as well. What process are you doing?- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:It has already been mentioned but, a button your shirt as high as it will go, b attach a piece of soft leather to the bottom of your hood for the neck. Nothing fancy just needs to block the arc rays and not fall off. I have a soft cuff of a wore out tig glove glued to the inside of mine and it works.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
Reply:At work, I apply coppertone 100 spf sunscreen before the start of a 10 hour shift, in places that the gear doesn't always cover. Neck and throat, behind the ears, etc. Never get burned... I do get burned if I don't use it. I can't comment on how well 50 spf works, but the 100 stuff is fantastic. A $9 tube lasts me about four months, it's well worth it. Only have to apply it one time all day.Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:I bought, and had a girl butcher, a pair of Carhartt bibs into an ankle length apron. I wore the bibs for years but now that I work out of my shack I need to shed the work clothes fast to go in an out of the house.Go look at a set. They're tough and heavy. To me they're as close to leather as you can be but without the heat.
Reply:Thank you everyone. My poor ears were burned the past few days. I am going to look like a weldninja and smell like the beach....and metal.
Reply:Two thumbs up on the regular, non-fireproof, double front Carharts. I'd be a bit concerned with a button up shirt letting light in, between the buttons. I like a regular cotton T-shirt to tig with, but it has to be dark, I've tanned my chest through a grey shirt at 150A ac. Reflections of the bench can get you too. You can put a flap on the helmet, but I just toss a similar size scrap of leather on the table if it looks like a neck tan is coming my way, I have used sunscreen on my knees while wearing shorts, but only if the parts I have to do that day stick out over the edge of my desk. sincerely,Mr. Desk JobPS: SMAW overhead I'd probably be wearing all the leather I could stand, and a PAPR.SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A

Reply:Worth covering up unless your doing a few tacks.. I welded in a T shirt for 8hrs a few years ago (dumb idea) and my arm burnt so bad it hurt like hell, and all peeled off. Nasty. Thought I was superman, guess not lolMiller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
