I want to learn how to weld a pipe to a plate, I have tried a few times, but the weld isn’t good, the molten metal from the electrode is just on one side, and I don’t know how to weld ithere is a picture from what i am talking about...i cant get a picture, since i dont have good camera, so i draw it  i hope you will understand what i am talking about...i am using 3/32" 6013 rods....i hope this thread is opened on the right forum, if not, please put it where it belongs...
Reply:I always use heavy angle iron, just weld the toes of the angle iron.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I assume you're using a stick welder. You just have to hold the stick deep enough in the crack to get the puddle to bridge between the two and then maintain it. I'll suggest using 6010 or 6011 so you don't have so much slag to deal with.                                   JMHO,                                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Try using a 1/8 6013, it'll be easier to bridge the gap (as you will be depositing more metal), turn the amps up to about what you would use for a fillet weld, make sure you get a good puddle started at the begining (give it a bit of a wiggle to make sure you catch both sides), lean the rod over a bit so that it has more of a dragging angle (but not too far) as this will allow you to deposit more weld material (to fill the gap) before the slag gets ahead of the puddle, than run along the joint weaving slightly to catch both sides.
Reply:I welded few pieces like that last week. I used 6013 3,2mm (1/8). If you have adjustable arc force you want to crank it up a little bit.
Reply:ok, thanks all for the suggestions, i will try to get electrodes tomorrow to try and weld that pipe...
Reply:x3 on the 1/8" electrodes if the material is thick enough to handle the heat. You dont want to weld one side, and burn through on the other one, that would be a disaster. Stick the rod down in the opening, and once the arc is lit, move the tip of the electrode from the plate to the pipe and back and repeat until the molten puddles on each run together. Good luck, and tell us how it went :-)[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:it kind of sounds like you're having slag inclusion in your weld, which is quite common with 6013s.  You have to keep the rod forward of the puddle to prevent trapping any of the flux in.  I'd suggest using a 6010/11 as mentioned above, 7018 works pretty well too
Reply:It is very rare to see a tube or pipe attached to a flat plate like you are showing.Almost impossible to get a decent weld.It is not usually done like that because the the plate is only attached to one side of the tube.Usually a tube end will be welded to a plate .Or a tube is slotted and a plate is inserted into the slot and the welded in all four points of contact and the tube is pulling straight on the tube centerline.Or the tube end is cut on a angle, and welded to a plate. That will be your next avenue of learning.DESIGN OF WELDMENTS.Start by looking at production welded things like barbeques etc.,,. the next time you are in a store.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 04-28-2011 at 07:51 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:What about drilling holes in the plate and plug welding to the pipe?
Reply:it might be rare to see a pipe welded to a plate, but that _joint_ is on almost every building structure there is. One of my apprentices was wrangling with that flared groove today on some monster bent plate. Getting a good weld on it requires a good weldor, but not an extraordinary one. If you can actually see the difference in the puddle and the slag, you can figure this out.Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24
Reply:I did this a couple times just messing around and had success with 1/8th 6010. I just drop the rod in the joint and drag it a little back and forth till i see the two sides tie in, then run it like a regular stringer. Other joints posted in this thread would be better though. I cant really think of a good application for this type of weld... aside from maybe a sign or something. Either way, have fun
Reply:We use that joint for handrail mounts all the time...3/32 7018, make sure the puddle bridges when you start your weld, and keep it that way...and it helps if you clean the mill scale off of both parts.
Reply:yesterday i got 1/8 7018 rods, i cranked up the current on my welder to ~140A AC, and the arc would lit, you can move 1mm and then the arc /would be gone, so you will need to start the arc again, and its a PIA (Pain In the A*s), and after couple attempts to lit the arc the rod would get red hot, and it behaves like a jelly, you can do whatever you want with it, but you cant weld anymore....so i will start looking for 6011 next week to try that too... and i asked how to weld pipe to a plate, because i need to weld hinges, so they look like pipe, so thats why i am practising on a pipe...the hinges look like the third from left...i hope you understand what i am talking about...
Reply:Unless they are some awful big hinges there is no way I would use 1/8" 7018.
Reply:weld on bullet hinges have  a flat side to make it easier to weld to plate.  I would forget about working with the pipe for practice, or at least fit it with angle before trying.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:the hinges that suppose to be welded are maded on a lathe, so they have cylindrical form
Reply:Is the pipe that you are practicing on the same OD as the hinges that you are going to use?
Reply:Use some cold roll or sucker rod for practice. We used to build cattle guards and it worked well with lo-hi rods.Miller Pro 30068 SA 20064 SAF 300305 G Lincoln gasserMiller 210

Reply:ok, i will try tomorrow if i can weld on 125A...
Reply:you did buy 7018 AC right?
Reply:from where i buyed the electrodes, i just told the guy to give me 7018, so arent they for AC and DC???
Reply:Originally Posted by Bojanfrom where i buyed the electrodes, i just told the guy to give me 7018, so arent they for AC and DC???If you want to get a really good weld, run a root pass of 1/8 5P+ (6010 with the gray flux) to fill the gap and then 3/32 7018 cap.In the field: '06 Ram 3500/Miller PP350    '14 F-350/Lincoln Classic 300DIn the shop: MM252, Hypertherm PM-85, White face MM200
