ok.. this time, im stick welding on quarter inch plate , 1/8'' 6010 rod, at about 100 amps. Notice the 'underwelding' where some of the weld beads are concave.. please advise me on what i can do to improve weldingweb!  3rd pass will come tomorrow
Reply:it looks to me like you could slow down the whip.  Not as far of a whip and come back farther into the puddle, about halfway into the puddle and you could probably pause a little longer while your in the puddle.  But thats just what i think..Im trying to learn this rod and the whip motion also so theres aothers on here who could help you much better.
Reply:Turn it down 10A and take your time, watch your puddle AND you metal stacking behind you, if you are goingto "step out and clean it up" (whip) then only step half as far. If you plan to use 7018 rods in the future you should practice with them, mild steel rods will cause you to develop bad habits, trust me. (I have been tryingto break my bad habits I learned from for 15years!   (Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:Pic, much better. Are there heat signs on the back side of the joint, an indication of penetration?
Reply:thanks for the responses.. i will definitely try not pulling it out of the puddle as far.. that seems like a legit solution to why i underweld a lot . pipeline-- well.. i want to try 7018 but the teach has had me running 6010 flat fillets forever.. barely lends any advice on how to get better, just wants me to 'keep practicing' .. i dont see the point of practicing something if you dont know how to do it right though.. thats why i post them here for this kind of feedback. thanks again.transit-- ya i def get the heat signs on the back of the plates for sure.. maybe tomorrow i will try to do 1 pass on a fillet and then bend it /take pics to see how far it actually penetrates on 1 pass.
Reply:Looks pretty good, a little far between puddles like Pipeline said. You might want to practice a little with your torch as well. Those cuts don't look too good.
Reply:AJM, Welding is an art form, we are all going to paint the same picture a little differently. I have friendswho are x-ray quality pipe welders that are plumb sorry if you give them some LH (7018). It was exactlywhat I was talking about with the bad habits, I learned to weld pipe first (downhill). I still catch myself wanting to "skate" something in every once in a while.Anyway, don't be afraid to let the rod "soak" a little. To give you an idea on amperage LH is usually runhotter than 6011, here at the shop I do not have a remote for my Miller and I set it at 91A to run 1/87018 and use it in all positions. It takes a lot of discipline to do it that way, but it is better for me thanwalking outside to change the dial! Hope this helps, good luck!Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:keep practicing and you will get better in time.
Reply:I never really whip a 6010 if im welding non open root plates. I use a more like a loop da loop motion. A cross between 7018 circular motion and the 6010 whip.
Reply:When we were taught last quarter stick, we only used the whip technique for a build up pad, and we used 7018 for our T joints...Miller Performance AD Helmet - Camo Edition Soon to have: Jackson HSL 100 - Forest Digi CamoMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC((Currently at welding school))
Reply:Heres some of my first horizontal lap joints i did when i was doing stick in school, i prefer to stack my beads really tight, just an example of another way you can do it. There is also a pic of a couple reall lonf flat position lap joints i did when i was starting out to. you are diong a good job, just fine tune it a little and stack a little tighter, you will see the puddle behind your arc almost flow and follow you and a crawl.
