I'm sure you guys have gotten these questions before so bare with me. I want to paint some parts of my welding hood to customize it a little bit. It's a Miller Digital Pro Hobby series welding hood. I want to paint the head adjuster knobs on the side as well as the frame for the front lense cover. Not too much to paint right there. I just wanna know what steps I should take as far as prep to make the paint adhere the best I can. Also what type of paint to use. I have tons of lexan/polycarbonate paint from my RC cars I could use. Or should I just get plastic krylon. Would I need to do a clear coat also?
Reply:Hey,there is really no reason you couldn't paint your hood as long as you use a fire resistant coating like the big companies do when covering up your design. Michael
Reply:I'm not familiar with the helmet. If it's possible, make sure you REMOVE the lens assembly before you paint. And the headgear. A lot better than taping it.Second, most any paint that will work on plastics will be just fine. A primer isn't necessary unless you're an overachiever. A clear coat, if it's high heat or fire resistant is beneficial but not necessary either. If your helmet is already painted/glossy.. run a wire brush/wheel over the thing first, then go to town. I usually just take a can of matte black spray paint and cover the whole thing. Nothing fancy.
Reply:Well my helmets black currently and fairly new. I'm going to keep it black but paint the adjusting knobs blue, the lense cover frame red or something. So not painting the whole hood. I'm in school so i gotta look like a badass. Especially for the ladies in my welding class
Reply:I thought I was cool when I painted mine with the Punisher skull on the front. A week later almost every student had a painted hood.I switched to plain black after that.
Reply:I'll see what happens then. About half the class has those harbor freight flame helmets already.
Reply:I actually had one kid who's mom bought him every welding tshirt you could find. The ones with the "Eat, Sleep, Weld" and "Because I'm a Welder, that's why" on the front. Then he went and got a hat embroidered with "WELD LIFE" on the back. He didn't make it to graduation. At least not with our class. Some people My opinion is, find some good gear early and ride it out til it falls apart. The only thing I get fancy with are safety glasses. I like anti-scratch, anti-fog, polarized, and padded around the eyes. So I spent $50 a dozen on some from a retailer online. That, and I've got a mean *** bucket and bucket organizer.
Reply:you should be fine. I bought a miller and I spray painted my name on it.... looks great and the paint hasn't chipped!
Reply:That kid with the "Weld Life" hat aint half is bad as the Diesel Tech kids at my school... they all put on those cummins, powerstroke, duramax, CAT t-shirts hats and hoodies and prance around with there diesel cologne. Funny part is when I walk outside to take get fresh air, I just see those guys washing the trucks HAHAHA!
Reply:You know it's always the guy with the beat-up '56 Ford with a one-horse trailer and doors wired shut that has 17-coats of mis-matched Krylon holding it all together that's the guy I look out for in the arena; not the one who pulls up in a brand new PowerStroke towing a $100k trailer.
