Had an open root butt joint with 1/16th root opening on 3/8th plate. Ran it vertical up and took a couple pics, let me know what you think. This was at school by the way after about 2 weeks of running GMAW. First pic should be my root pass then my fill pass then my weave for the cap. looks like undercut on the edges of the cap but it isn't just shadow. I usually do stingers for fill and cap but decided to do it tihs way for this competency. Im very open to constructive criticism so play ball. Attached Images
Reply:I'd want to see the back of the root pass to see you penetration. The tech school here uses 3/32" root, 1/8" land on the 3/8" open root bevel plates. Most times if the root is less than 3/32" the students will not get good penetration in the root, that's why I ask.Overall it looks pretty good, but a poor root pass with no penetration makes the rest pretty much academic..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The last pic, Are those spot welds very close together and ran very quickly? They look good, I just remember when I was back in School, we thought we were Hot Sh!t when doing GMAW 3G, we would do a series of very hot and fast spot welds. Out teacher caught right on.Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a persons ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:The penetration looked real good just didnt take a pic of it, i passed my competency first try so it turned out well for me that time. and it was 1/16th to 3/32 root opening with a 3/32 root face on it. The cap was not hot fast spot welds it was a weave bead pauseing on each side as i weaved my way up the plate. the fill pass is a smaller version of my cover pass just held the edges and worked my way up like you would with a 7018 pass. thanks guys
Reply:Nice. But, just to be an a$$ that is not a open root butt joint, it is a V-Groove.

Reply:Looks pretty consistent overall. In pic number two, you can see where your pattern changed a couple inches up, but the edges look very evenIf you're looking for constructive criticism, personally I'd want to see the "ripples" packed more tightly. Try moving up in a "modified zigzag", Move up slightly (up and to the right, for example), let it fill in, then move almost directly to the left, and let it fill in. Then repeat, this way you're building a shelf each time you move upward, and IMO it makes a better looking bead.Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:nice weld
Reply:thanks for the support appreciate it.
Reply:I agree with Primetime. "Modified zigzag" makes a great looking bead. Keep up the good work.Do what it takes to get the job done right. |
