Hey all!Noobie here. I have a generic 90 amp 110v buzzbox type welder I bought a fews years back from aauto parts store. Used for some light-weight projects. I recently bought a used Miller ThunderboltAC/DC unit, so I don't plan on using that old one. I was wondering if anyone has ideas on using itfor another purpose, maybe rigging for spot welding??
Reply:build a HF box and use it for a small tig welderSell it to the neighbor kid for $50Open it up and see what makes it tick, maybe figure out a way to make it put out a constant voltage and build a battery booster
Reply:As mentioned selling it to someone else so they can learn is always a good option.I wouldn't instantly look at dumping it however. While the Tbolt will blow the doors off that little machine, it's a bit tough to go portable with it. On occasion it's nice to have a small welder for light weight portable repairs that can be run on 110v power. I can think of dozens of small projects where a small 110v stick machine would be better than nothing at all. That said, if I can get to it with the bigger machine, then that's the way I'd go..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:An Ac tig would require a HF box. Unfortunately with only 90 amps, you aren't going to be doing much tig welding alum with it. If it's a small DC only tig, you don;t need a HF box to do tig, though with only 90 amps, at most you might be able to do 1/16" tops. I think he might mean to add a DC rectifier to the Ac machine so you get DC output vs AC. Then it might be worth the effort IF you enjoy electronics projects if for no other reason.A better choice if you want to do basic tig, would be to read Tozzi's sticky thread on basic scratch start tig and buy a rig for your AC/DC Tbolt and use DC. In Dc you won't need HF and you can easily do 3/16" with that stick machine in DC. Ac tig with it really isn't worth the effort. Even with a HF box added to the AC side, you still lack the ability to use a remote to vary your amps while welding, something that is extremely useful when doing AC tig on alum. It takes a tremendous amount of skill to do alum tig with no remote, well beyond the vast majority of the members here, even those with quite a bit of experience.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-Welder-People.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The little 50a AC welders Sears and Wards sold, had a ground and stinger that clipped together, to use for carbon arc heating.Worked good for brazing, sweat soldering and bending.I still have one on a self.
