My lws says that these are now replacing the reds (thoriated) and that they're not getting the reds anymore.  Anyone try these, the ends are purple.  Does anyone know what the chemical composition says on the front there, if that looks like lanthanated and zirconiated? Thanks! Attached Images
Reply:There's been a bunch of recent treads about these with some good info. Do a search for E3 Purple and they should pop up.
Reply:I tried it and hated it. Not sure what brand it was but I want to try another one to make sure I didn't have a bad one.  Others seem to love it.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:OK looked up the chemical composition and it looks really like its just a 1.5% lanthanated with a small percentage Zirconiated. Attached Images
Reply:I really like arc zones blue all purpose hybrid tungsten.  Works for everything.

Reply:I'm seeing oxides of lanthanum, zirconium and yttrium.  Yttrium being radioactive.  Wonder if it's an impurity or supposed to be there. I've done all my DC welding with 1.5% Lanthanated for the last few years.  Just this morning I ordered a pack of 2%L.  Interested to see how it behaves.I fiddled about with different AC electrodes for almost a year.  6 months ago I ended up back where I started; 2% Thoriated and about one size larger than "needed" ground to a point with a small land.Syncrowave 300Maxtron 450, S-52E, 30A
Reply:Tried out the purple E3 this afternoon and I quite like it , stayed sharp longer than my thoriated or ceriated.  Still haven't tried lanthanum out though, I saw Jody's tests and I want to try using 2% blues.

Reply:I'm just curious if there is any one who packages for example a pack of lanthanum tungsten like 3 electrodes of .040, 3 electrodes of 1/16 and 3 of 3/32 or some sort of a combo pack like that?
Reply:Just went on eBay and ordered a 10 pack of 2% 3/32 lanthanum, only $20 not too shabby!

Reply:U will be happy.  Your E3 is a 1.5 Lanthanated with a little hocus pocus and $$$ added.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Looks like a plethora of three oxide rare earth blends out there.Radnor E3 purpleDiamond Ground TriMix WS2 ivoryWolfram Witstar WS2 turquoiseHuntingdon Fusion MultiStrike light blueArc Zone ArcTime sky blueWeldcraft Rare Earth light blueCK Worldwide Layzr light greenThe only ones with a disclosed formula seem to be the 98.3 Tungsten, 1.5 Lanthanum, 0.08 Zirconium, 0.08 Yttrium.Others claim secret proprietary recipes. Wolfram's looks to go back a decade and the product info claims superiority for welding nearly everything. See http://www.wolfram-industrie.de/download.phpGuessing that maybe the formula has been cracked or the patent ran out.If there are differences due to oxide homogeneity within the electrode and sometimes mislabelling of color codes in the factory and process variations in composition, YMMV. Perhaps some double blinded comparison tests are required.Last edited by blueytoo; 11-02-2013 at 08:59 PM.
Reply:So E3 purple is rebadged by a load of companies (9 listed including Linde and Radnor/Airgas).http://www.e3tungsten.com/index.html
