Bend test AWS D1.1 Question

The book isnt very clear on this, or maybe I am over thinking it. So heres the deal  (3/4" V grove SMAW, with backing (7018). What I can't figure out is the width the plate needs to be for a side bend. D1.1 refers me to figure 4.13, the figure says 3/8, however on the little table below it states that 3/8-1-1/2" equals ( T ). so t=T. . . with that said, I would assume that the strip needs to be 3/4", However I measured my Test bend coupon from another certification which was (Flux core on 1" plate with backing), and that was 3/8ths.... so the number I keep running in to is, 3/8ths.... any input would be appreciated.

Reply:So cut two "slivers" 3/8th thick,  adding 1/8th to each side for thermally cut coupons. Correct?
