I have welded everything from automotive applacations to heavy off road vehicles and bridge s teel.but I never learned to tig. so I bought me a Lincolnpres 185 and am learning have steen some what beaten into supmission but AL has me held off'   so my question is a gas lense set up and learn the proper use of it hard and most of all what is the applocations. ..
Reply:Nope.
Reply:Gas lenses allow you to either use less gas or stick the tungsten way out, or both. Seems to be real nice for things like tubular exhaust manifolds where you can't easily get your cup down into the tight spots.
Reply:Rolland-see linkGTAW of Aluminumhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=51983Tuning up your grammar and spelling would help others understand what you're asking.Blackbird

Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=51983IS a great reference ... thanks for the information...Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Reply:I use a gas lens all the time. Never yet had an instance where I had to switch to anything else. However I have never even welded with anything else so I don't know what the differences are personally.
Reply:I tried a gas lens for a while and didn't notice a damn bit of difference.  I managed to toast it running the torch too hot and never bothered getting a new one.  I run a #6 or #7 cup (only sizes I have) and 12-15 cfh.  Sometimes a little less gas if the bottle is about empty.  My take on it is that a lens isn't always needed, but may be needed in certain instances.  I haven't run into any that require it myself. My name's not Jim....

Reply:Originally Posted by TaidenDo you ever have issues with tight spots on stainless tubular manifolds? Just crank up the gas and stick it out?
Reply:Originally Posted by BoostinjdmNot everybody does manifolds.  That may be one of the times it is needed, but until I have problems attributed to coverage, I don't need one.
Reply:the disadvantage is the cup is bigger and wont fit in as tight a spot..

Reply:I have an extra torch with thumb wheel (brand new) and two boxes of cups and stuff if any of you non gas lens guys want? I'll trade it for all your unused gas lens stuff.Taiden its me that builds manis.Last edited by VPT; 06-19-2011 at 11:27 AM.
Reply:This makes a HUGE difference when welding THICK metals.
Reply:It may help to an extent but those pictures are doctored. You will not get laminar flow like that next to a boundary layer without turbulence. Someone with a smoke machine hook it up to your torch and get some real videos showing what is actually going to happen and it may put things in perspective for their actual differences.

Reply:Now what happens while welding?

Reply:Wow. That is amazing. Any chance of getting pics minus the lens?
