Ive got a buddy that welds for a living that has basically set me up. Ive been messing with my welder for a few months and am fairly good with welding aluminum but steel just throws me off for some reason. I was told the size of my electrode makes a difference when working with different thickness materials. Im also not so sure on the diameter of the filler rod I should be using for both aluminum and steel. Im mostly doing automotive stuff with 16 or 18 gauge pipe and will be doing some thicker stuff for custom engine mount brackets. I cannot get an amazingly nice looking weld with steel and I believe the culprit to be either the size of my electrode or my filler rod. Thoughts? My welds end up not spreading horizontally very well and instead are more vertical (thick).

Reply:I'm not great by any means but I can usually do most gauge metals with a 3/32" red (2% thoriated) tungsten and have it come out decent. Definitely check what kind of tungsten you are using, but also under 16 gauge or so I'd say a 1/16" tungsten is better. If it is a green tungsten that is 100% pure tungsten usually used for Al, it also doesn't keep a tip well. If you can't see a color grab some reds and give it a shot. For filler I generally use 1/16 for smaller gauges it melts in nice. I'd say use filler that is slightly smaller than your base material but that is just my opinion I'm sure there is a proper way to do it.As for your vertical penetration probs, try walking it a bit.
Reply:Doing some research myself on Tig electrodes. Here is a good link I found:http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ints_tips.html
Reply:What machine do you have we are not related to Houdini give us a hint what you are doing?
