a old friend of mine , prolly in his 70's gave me a high frequency add on for my idealarc 250 ac/dc, and this tig torch unit. i have searched for a few days on the internet and nothing comes up when i search. its a metal body one , and its straight, has a weird on off gas valve too. the other thing is it seems like there is no way to hook it up to my stick welder for lift arc.has anyone ever seen one of these ? if so is it a tig torch ? and about how old is this thing?secondly , where do you hold ? lol the metal part , or the part just past the cup ? thanks alotsays twentieth century model 2584 on it .....thanks Attached Images"I'd Rather die on my feet , than live on my knee's"64' Lincoln Sa 200 Redface Code 5496 - Sold 72' Lincoln Idealarc 250 (Roundtop) MillerMatic Vintage
Reply:It looks like a machine torch to me.
Reply:looks like an old machine torch, probably used to weld pipe in a welding lathe, looks like it might take the same size cups as a #17 torch but I am in no way an expert in these things. You are not going to be able to use that thing by hand
Reply:I agree with the other posters. It's for an automated weld process application. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:If you think you're going to do "lift arc" with that Idealarc buzzbox (no matter what torch you choose), then, you just haven't done your homework.Scratch start only and no remote amp control.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:don't need to do homework when ive done it in person. touch metal with tungsten and lift and arc starts , maybee i might have the "term" wrong , but my intention is correct."I'd Rather die on my feet , than live on my knee's"64' Lincoln Sa 200 Redface Code 5496 - Sold 72' Lincoln Idealarc 250 (Roundtop) MillerMatic Vintage

Reply:At work , we have alot of miller xmt 304's and miller pheonix 456's and we set the dial to lift arc and do exactly as i described. touch and lift. it's hooked up just like i planed on doing it , stinger is hooked to the tig torch. the only reason i am confused is because the machine also has a scratch tig selection and we don't use that ( hence my confusion)alot of times we use the regular tig with the foot pedal , but when it's a pain with the pedal , we switch to lift arcLast edited by thinktwicez71; 06-22-2011 at 08:28 PM."I'd Rather die on my feet , than live on my knee's"64' Lincoln Sa 200 Redface Code 5496 - Sold 72' Lincoln Idealarc 250 (Roundtop) MillerMatic Vintage
Reply:Lift arc capable machines reduce power to the electrode to a few volts and a few amps. The electrode is then touched to the metal and lifted. When electrode is lifted and small spark created, this is detected by the welding machine and then full (set) power is immediately applied. It reduces contamination of electrode and weld since in low power mode (during lift) it is well below the limit required for metal transfer.By contrast, scratch start is at set (high) power thus metal transfer between electrode and weldment and easier contamination when scratching electrode to weldment to start the arc.Hope that helps.Last edited by turner; 06-22-2011 at 11:18 PM.Dynasty 200DXBobcat 250, TD Cutmaster 38 Hobart Stickmate AC/DC LXHobart 210 Mig / SpoolgunCentury Mig, O/A rigPress/Ring Roller/Tubing Roller/Hyd. Reply:+1 to what turner said....good explanation...
Reply:Get rid of that old machine torch and buy yourself a newer tig torch with a gas valve, a bottle of argon and away you go, ready to scratch start tig weld steel and stainless steel. Reply:I had that same "TIG" torch back in the mid 60's. It came with a Sears Colormatic welding machine I got for Christmas (OK...Dad got it for me but he's the one that actually wanted it...we all know how that goes...haha),What you did was clamp it in the rod holder and push the slide valve to turn on the argon. The machine also had a rectifier that hung off the side of the machine.I never used the TIG torch but made a pretty cool utility trailer with the welder. That thing is probably junk but you might give it a try....I would if I had it now....just for kicks.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:Garden art buy a 17 series torch with valve and start welding.
Reply:I think that is what would be called "welding arcana". I would keep it just for kicks, but it has so long been surpassed by actual good working torches that it is just not practical to try and use it, unless, of course, you crash landed on an remote tropical island... |
