I'm making up a set of Titanium sliders for a motorcycle floorboard. I need to weld a 5/8"x1/4" block to another piece of Ti. It's non structural, and I only need to make 2. Anyone got a single piece of filler rod they'd like to sell me, around 1/16"? Christ the min order online is 1lb at $90, and my local supplier doesn't even know where to get it. If someone wants to send me out a single piece of wire I'd be happy to pay for it, just don't need a whole pound!
Reply:$90 is cheap. What grade is it?

Reply:Ti for sure though I don't know what grade. It's just for floorboard sliders, I may just try fusing them with no filler.
Reply:Note:Titanium is very-very-very sensitive to oxidation when hot (as in from welding).Make SURE that you have very-very-very good gas shielding before welding or attempting to weld titanium.  Often, trailing shields and back shields or back-purging or a complete glove-box are needed.Pretty much, if you get ANY 'heat-tint' (oxidation coloration), you pretty much ruined the titanium.  If the oxide color is past straw or light brown and into blue/indigo or green or God forbid grey or white, then you for-sure ruined the part.  Throw it out and start over. And even more-so than welding steel or aluminum, titanium MUST be clean-clean-clean if it will be welded. And also, not all titanium alloys are weldable and some titanium alloys are only weldable in certain heat-treament conditions.Don't weld titanium unless you know the alloy and have checked the last heat treatment that was performed. It is NOT like just grabbing some 70S6 filler and welding a piece of steel. And I would differ in calling some titanium motorcycle frame sliders as 'non-structural'.  True that they aren't structural when just riding around, but once you lean the bike over and the sliders are sliding on the ground then they damn-sure are being stressed/loaded.And you don't want a metal piece rubbing on the ground to suddenly 'grab' or rip off or otherwise cause any sudden change in things.  Cause then things can go bad fast, since you would probably be on the 'edge' if you had the bike leaned over that far and the slightest change in things makes things change.  Fast.  Or the weld fails and the chunk of titanium lets loose and wrecks havok and destruction on you, the bike, and/or those behind or around you.IMNSHO.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:It's just a floorboard slider, my floorboard slider, and yes, I have ground off my magnesium sliders several times to the point where they let go, I'm just crazy like that. I'll try fusing them and see what I get. Gonna use a gas diffuser and a giant cup, since it's only 5/8" square I'm hoping I can keep it all inside the gas bubble.
Reply:Instant message me your address. I'll try to help you out. B_C got a care package from me a few years ago and I might be able to fix you up too.Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:Thanks for the offer Pangea but I think I'm good. I got a few rods from that ebay link shovelon sent. I just got done making a test piece by just fusing it, and it looks fine. Used a #12 cup with a diffuser and the gas and postflow cranked way up. Got a nice silver to straw color with the slightest hint of purple at the edge of one end, but the fusion beads themselves are clean. Going to make a couple of real parts up tomorrow and I'll put them on the bike this weekend. On a side note, from what I see grinding this stuff, it's going to make some kick *** sparks.
