well... Ive tried this (6g, 2" sch 40, carbon tig) for the first time hoping to knock it out of the park and try a test right after... didnt work out that wayThat pipe practice today beat my a$$ down but not defeated me, i will win this battle...ever since i left the shop today ive been thinking about what went down, how to fix it, etcwhat i know i did wrong was not wait for the pipe to cool down, was getting little bit of undercut along my cap, red hot once i was done, double root pass appearance on the inside,,, learning to walk a cap in the 6g with the left hand is frustrating.. so after this i had to walk away from itI used:2" sch 40 carbon pipe1/8 gapfeather edge1/8 filler for root3/32 filler for fill/cap3/32 2% tungsten / foot pedal85 amp for my root ( i might try 75 next time, root was ok but never impressed me100 amp quick filler 110 for my cap i think (cant remember)im thinking i was running way to hotso that brings me to my question....What amps would you generally use for cap pass / filler on 2" sch 40?1/8 filler rod or 3/32 for the cap?i was also trying to walk the cup (#7) for the cap pass and it worked out ok on my right hand side, not good at all on my left hand side, i need to learn this but i may try to freehand it but using a tig finger to rest on the pipe to steady myselfwould anyone else have any other little tips for capping sch 40 carbon pipe? much appreciated in advanceill be going back tomorrow to try this againthanks
Reply:Doesn't sound like your to far off, remember inner pass temp, for CS  it would 500 . It's good to weld root any were from 70 to 100 with 3/32 but it's all around your technique and travele speed.to slow cause suck back, to fast can cause lack of fusion. Everyone is different, anyway after a good root turn machine up at least 10 to 15 amps for hot pass. After that it's all about the correct heat for Your Travele speed, But Yes let it cool down for Cap. I have welded and I test / bend coupons for a living, Passed and Failed several welders, Remember Everyone has a slightly diff technique , Good Luck
Reply:When your practicing try different length of tungsten , in and out, most people when learning to walk cup make the mistake of extending to much, it does help you see but it creates other probs, slippage / too much preheat or puddle in front, try shorter lengths
Reply:Try 1/8" for the cap at 100 amps. Using smaller rod at a high heat will cause the base to really heat up and that's where the undercut comes from. Walk away between passes and get a drink, practice your bs, or check emails. Sch 40 pipe wool get smoking hot in no time.Sent from my DROID RAZR using TapatalkLong after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain. Both of my Poppy's 1954 Short Hoods -Third generation to weld with it and teaching a fourthSA 2## - Bought and sold more than I can remember or care to list, 8 in the shop right now
