Anyone ever use straight polarity to burn though galvanized w/ 7018? My thought is that by throwing the heat into the work peace with a slightly longer arc @130 amps I can burn off more galvanizing making it much easier to weld. I know it's "technically" wrong but if I'm getting good penetration and the weld looks good?...
Reply:If you are unable to grind the galv off and you are using 7018 I suggest just welding it reverse polarity like usual. Long arcing 7018 will give you porosity and make it hard to control, don't know what straight polarity does with 7018 because I have never tried it.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:To answer your question simply, no. If welding through galvanized and to ensure the "best" results (less porosity, contamination, best penetration & fusion) use 6010/6011. Just my opinion and experience with zinc. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... Reply:Ive tried it once   welding (Hot) somewhere between W.T.F.? and Nuclear!     Wellding galvi chain to plate.  After I was done It slid right off when I picked it up.  2nd time it worked cause I had burned the galvi off.Go with 6010“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
